Welcome to INTL5.0, the brainchild of Sandamnit (on the programming) and Sunny (on the XHTML/design).

Wait... Wait... What the fuck, where is INTL4?
Well, before I explain anything I guess I should answer this. To briefly summarize (LOL IM SUCH A FAG!!) INTL4 was the 'upgrade' that Sandy had planned to do in 2004 or so. It was sophisticated and in the process of completion, but a number of events finally killed Sandy's drive to complete it. Firstly, the public alpha version that was put forth - where INTLers were brought in as 'temporary admins' - failed, since they inadvertently had access to the real INTL at that time. Most importantly, Sandy added so much shit to every script, that creating a template system created more and more problems. Each addition would cause a cascade of errors. He had enough and quit. Last year he released the code to the public, since he did not intend to ever complete it. It was assumed that another 'upgrade' to INTL would never come to pass.

So why did INTL5 get created, and why is Sunny a part of it?
Fast forward to two months ago (mid March). In a number of conversations with etyxmris and Sunny, Sandamnit showed interest in creating another message board system using the skills he had acquired in the last 4 years since working on INTL4. As he dislikes designing and having to do much work with HTML, Sunny volunteered to do the design and the XHTML. She suggested making it so that INTL was standardized to WC3 standards (the 'recommendations' made on how websites should appear, in order to provide greater accessibility to those who are disabled, on other medium instead of computers, and who use a wide variety of browsers). Not long after, the pair started on the project, writing the code for the PHP and the XHTML/CSS by scratch.

By scratch? INTL5 uses nothing of INTL3 or INTL4?
Yes, by scratch. INTL5 uses nothing from INTL3, neither in PHP or in XHTML/CSS. INTL5 does use some code from INTL4, but only on those scripts that share in similarity with ones applied to in INTL4, as in upload.php. The PHP that Sandy has used is entirely unique in its format and structure. The PHP coding is separate from the XHTML, unlike in INTL3 where the HTML was part of the PHP (MAGUSMAGUSMAGUSMAGUS). It utilizes AJAX, to make thinks work nearly instantaneously and without reloading. It is much more efficient and speedy. It is much more flexible, and features can be added onto with relative ease. It's overall pretty fucking sweet. The XHTML is also rewritten. INTL3 uses obsolete HTML coding, which causes problems with how browsers display information, and with how much of the style can be edited. Tables within tables within tables is generally not seen as a really good way of displaying information. Nor does it make it easy for changes to be added without problems arising.

I don't get it? It doesn't look too much different. It doesn't feel any different.
That was the intention, to be honest. Even though many templates can be made (and will be made!) which will be totally radical and awesome and so different, it was generally agreed that INTL's default template/skin should continue to look as much as possible as INTL3's, in order to diminish any problems with culture shock. We wanted to retain a feeling of a 'home' or a place that was still familiar, but which was vastly different beyond appearances in how it operates. So, while it looks the same, it's not built the same. And frankly, if it's hated, admins can always make more templates and users have the option of making custom and personal edits to the stylesheets to fit with what they want.

Templates? Stylesheets?
It's explained in detail below, but think of templates and stylesheets together as being synonymous with a 'skin.' INTL can have many skins, which can be chosen by users or set specifically to a forum. Templates are the structure: the XHTML and how the PHP code is called to display within it. It's the tables, the format, the shape of the forum. Stylesheets are what provides the color, the style and the alignment of the elements - text, data, whatever - that's within the structure - the templates. Templates can be changed by admins only, but can be chosen by users from a given list. Stylesheets can be changed by either users or admins... again it's better explained below.

I take it this is the final version of INTL5 then? No more updates?
Well, no. This version that you're on is not the final version. We expect there to be bugs and glitches. There's still some scripts to do, and some features to add. Most of these issues are minor ones, or those that revolve around additional features. So there'll be continual updates for the next while, for certain, and you can expect some little changes and more add-ons. Given the flexibility of the code, adding features is not a hassle. If you can think it, it may be possible to add it.

Is there anyway I can help? Anything I can do?
Yes. Always. If you would like, provide input on everything. Provide suggestions for new features and complaints about current ones. Continue to use the forum as usual - perhaps stretch it to its limits - in order to find bugs and funky scripts. Comment. Discuss. Help us to make INTL5 better for you and more understandable to use. In all circumstances, we will try to accommodate.

Alright, well, what are the features then? What's new? What's awesome?
Ha! I thought you'd never ask (or perhaps I'm crazy and answering rhetorical questions big grin). There is (to some success) a fairly comprehensive changelog for INTL5. It contains nearly all the major and most of the minor public changes that have been implemented. I will continue to update it as features are added after its launch, and as I find more changes I overlooked originally. Below is a brief list of some of the more major changes. I apologize for the redundancy, both from these questions and from the changelog.

General

  • INTL5 is composed of completely reworked programming code - nothing of INTL3's code remains (though it may appear so, it certainly isn't). It is largely PHP based, as was INTL3, though it's much more improved, sophisticated, up-to-date, and efficient. INTL5 also utilizes AJAX in its features.

  • The PHP code is now separate from the XHTML code, not as in INTL3 where the HTML was built into the PHP. MAGUSMAGUSMAGUSMAGUS This provides greater ease of editing. There are endless designs for INTL that can now (relatively easily) be implemented.

  • With Sandy's new genius code, INTL can expand drastically with the number of features and options it has. Unlike INTL3 code, INTL5 code can now support massive improvements and many more features. You think it, it's implementation is entirely plausible.

  • INTL's XHTML is now nearly 100% validated to what is expected for XHTML1.0 and XHTML1.1. INTL now upholds WC3 standards, the latest browsers, and accessibility laws.

  • INTL now runs on fully functioning and efficient CSS. This allows for the centralization of INTL's style and for greater variability in design.

New Shit

  • INTL Wiki! - Much to Amphy's pleasure, INTL now has a MediaWiki attached to it. This will be used to hold the TOS, FAQ, calendar, help information, and information regarding donations. In addition, it is our desire to eventually expand it to include history, forumer pages, and so on. It is freely open to the users of INTL.

  • Control Panel - You have a control panel now! It stores your PMs, subscriptions, links to edit your user preferences/profile information, as well as to view your karma/titles. You may even change your templates/stylesheets.

  • Templates & Stylesheets - There are now two means to change the style of INTL: through templates and stylesheets.

    • Templates are only editable by the admins, however, they can be made available to INTLers publicly as options, as the default style for a specific forum (eg. RS) or both (for example, you can choose to have the RS look outside of RS). Templates are the structure of the forum - its tables, its format, its XHTML. Since the PHP code is stored in separate files, the XHTML can be manipulated in whatever fashion, and still call the same PHP code with little hassle. There is already plans to eventually have radically different templates, including those with pure AJAX only, and those with minimalist design.

    • Stylesheets are the CSS that defines the style of each forum. Each template can have multiple stylesheets, that can be implemented as default for that template by an admin at anytime. Furthermore, INTLers can now change their own stylesheets. In your "Control Panel" there is the option of changing whatever elements in your own personal stylesheet as you like, for each template that you use (each template can have its own personal stylesheet, which will be saved). So if you get really fed up with how INTL looks - at least in color, width - even the logo - you can change it for yourself. If you want to return to the default, merely remove all the CSS in your changestyle.php file, and it will automatically revert to the default.

  • Child Forums - Now, there can be forums inside of forums, and categories inside of forums, and categories inside of categories... and its endless. Endless levels of forums within eachother. These "Child Forums" can also each have their own templates, their own moderators and their own user permissions. They can be just as hidden and just as limited in user access as any other forum on INTL.

  • Quick Reply - At the end of every thread is the quick reply box. Its been a long time coming, but you no longer have to click an extra link to reply to a thread (though that's still available). All you have to do is enter the data, and click submit. No longer do you have to wait for too many pages to load. Also it's gorgeously designed.

  • Bans/Warnings Forum - Bans and warnings are now an automatic part of the system, as such a new forum has been created that - similar to "Reported Posts" - that will create a new thread that will show the information of the ban/warn at the time that the ban/warn is instituted for a given user. It will also show unbans as well. Admins/Mods no longer need to create threads in the "Hall of Rejects" when a ban or warn is made. This system also attaches a message to the post that the user was banned/warn for.

Innovations

  • Rating With Stars - You may now rate threads similarly to Netflix and YTMND. With the use of AJAX, you merely need to hover over the star you wish to vote it as, and click it. Your own vote is show as the red stars. The overall vote for that thread is shown with the blue stars.

  • The New Map - INTL has a new map based off of Google maps. All you need to do is type in your city's name, and it will automatically appear. If you wish to move your location, all you need to do is pick up the marker and move it. If you zoom out, you will be able to see where other INTLers are located. If you click on a marker, it will link you to a zoomed in view of that user's location. It will also show you the distance between you and that person. If you end up deciding to delete your location, the next time you load the map it will show up in the average center between all users on the map.

  • Uploading - When you desire to upload a file to either the gallery or your files folder, you will find upload.php now allows you to upload from an URL. You no longer have to download an image or something to your computer and then upload it to INTL. You can bypass that just by linking to the file. It is also now dynamic. If you wish to add more files, you merely have to click "Add Another File" and it will open a space for you.

  • The Gallery - The Gallery is now a combination of both the Photojournal and the previous INTL3 Gallery. You can use it to put up whatever (legal) pictures you desire to show the public, and you can categorize them in folders which you create. Ideally, it will be reworked to allow for sorting. You may also flag images from your files folder, to show in the gallery and one image to show in your profile. In addition, each image can now have a title and a description. Along with that, any details regarding the image are now shown vis-a-vis DeviantArt.

  • The Brand New Arcade - A common problem that arose with INTL3, was that its arcade could not be updated as it was coded. For the last two years, if it wasn't showing data properly, it was limited in the number of games it could have. INTL's new arcade is adapted from a common arcade format found in other message board systems, thus, the number of arcade games available to INTL now reach far into the thousands. If this increased choice wasn't enough, the arcade is now coded to show messages related to each user's accomplishments (as displayed in profile.php too), the newest games, and the top three users who have the most high scores in the arcade. It also shows who else is playing.

  • Subscriptions & The RSS Feed - The threads you subscribe to are now shown in a threaded format in your "Control Panel." This centralizes those threads that you will have subscribed to, and - if you're like me, and have it set to subscribe to threads you've posted in - it will show those threads in a neat format. The RSS feed is also fixed and standardized for the latest browsers. There are plans for RSS feeds for karma and titles, too.

  • Idle Time Stalking - With the utilization of AJAX, it is now possible to hover over a user's username, and see the time they've been idle in any one location in real time.

  • Active Users - To go along with the idle time stalking, the "Active Users" page now shows in greater detail where users are at. Be it what game they're playing in the Arcade, or which forum they're viewing. It even links to the thread they're checking out!

  • Instant Karma - Whenever you give a user karma, it no longer loads a new page for you to do so. It's near-instantaneous! Just click, and it will reshow the karma for that user with your given karma added. No additional pages loaded or refreshed. To make it more clear that you're doing an action, a loading dialogue will appear to show you that an action is taking place.

  • Previous Search Queries & Searching Dates - If you've ever wanted to know what your last searches were using the "Search" function, they are now displayed to you. They show the time it was searched, the number of results for that search, and a link to its results. Furthermore, if you've ever wanted to search a date, it is now much more simplified. There is no longer a single format. You may type in "Yesterday" "Today" "Jan 18 2008"... whatever is a valid date, and the search script will take it into consideration.

  • The Improved Memberlist - Titles are out, other things are in. The memberlist, while it no longer displays titles or can be sorted by karma, now shows user's AIM names, their birthday and (possibly in the future) their last time online at INTL instead.

  • Avatar Resizing - Avatars that you upload now automatically resize to a maximum size of 100x100, no matter what the size of the resolution is of the image you decide to upload.

  • Chat Tweaks - Although the /nick command has been removed, in order to fix certain errors and limit misrepresentation, the chat no longer queries the database every 5 seconds for usernames and data. Instead, a cookie is created for the chat session which will be referenced instead of the database. This vastly may increase certain issues with the chat, the speed of the chat and the burden that it places on the server.

  • Converting To A Poll - Now, if you ever create a thread and forget to add a poll to it, you can do it at any given time. Not only that, you may remove a poll from a thread or modify it however you like. Polls are more flexibly applied now.

  • Multiple Usergroup Owners - If you ever choose to have more than one usergroup owner, you now can. In addition, html now displays properly on the index for the usergroups, and whenever someone wishes to join, a PM is sent to the owner(s) of that group, in regards to that petition.

Design

  • Paging - You should now notice that many pages, including files, the gallery, PMs, possibly even the Arcade, among others, are now shown on multiple pages. This is to allow for further organization, to take some stress off the database, and to assist those whose internet connections can not sustain a mass amount of data at once.

  • 9 Colors, Not Just 3 - INTL5's default template now supports nine basic colors, not just the three that were available to INTL before. Whether this matters or not, I felt it worthwhile to mention it.

  • Nested Tables - The tables used to exhibit data are now nested correctly. This provides a greater aesthetic look, and also helps conform the code substantially.

  • No more tables inside of tables inside of tables - Oh Pants.

  • Greater Sorting - In many scripts you may see more options to sort the table data as you like. Although there are a number of scripts pending regarding this addition, in some cases (files.php, viewkarma.php and viewtitles.php for example) it has already been implemented.

  • Highlighted Posts - Posts which are now directly linked to, either through the forum or by an url, now show up with a background color distinct from the rest of the posts, except the original post of that thread. This may help substantially for those threads where there are plenty of pictures, or for those of us who get easily confused as to which post they were linked to by another user.
There's more that I probably left out, but for a sample it's quite a bit. I think that's it then. If you have questions, ask. This is the ever progressing culmination of our work, and we do hope you enjoy it. TEST: *sigh*

I like the quick reply feature, but I also find it a little distracting and not really aesthetically pleasing. Can we implement an option to make it optional in the preferences or am I asking too much?

Something about this layout is currently looking more "boxy" and a little clunkier than previous. I'm sure I'll get used to it. This is looking pretty good, judging by the description.

Thanks!

I was thinking of having smaller images, but have had little luck finding decent stars. If anyone is good at design graphics, and wants to make up some stars, please do so.

Quoted from Ztolk:

I have no problems with it in Firefox, but it could be an issue with the alternative text in Firefox3 (is that what you use?). I'll have to look into it more. Thread tag alternative titles are built into the tag, not the coding per se.

For some reason it wasn't coded. It should be fixed soon.

Can you please take screenshots of the source code? Are there any other areas of INTL which you are having issues with? I didn't account fully for Safari, and would like to fix the issues associated with it.

Quoted from Kayte:
I liked sorting the memberlist by karma, it helped remind me who has been relevant on the site for any length of time. But, oh well.

I brought this up with Sandy a while ago. For the way INTL5 is currently set up, karma sorting isn't too practical from what I understand. There will be other columns and further sorting, I assure you.

Quoted from Hasty:
I like the quick reply feature, but I also find it a little distracting and not really aesthetically pleasing. Can we implement an option to make it optional in the preferences or am I asking too much?

That would have to pass by Sandy, but I don't see why not.

Quoted from Hasty:

I apologize. My goal was to try to make it look as much as INTL3, but without falling into the same errors INTL3 had in its design code. The look shouldn't be anymore boxy than INTL3 (MAGUSMAGUSMAGUSMAGUS) but in other templates it would be fixed. You can change the design of this template if you don't like part of it, through your "Control Panel" via the changestyle.php script. It may not relieve the boxiness, but it's something.

Thank you so far for the comments. i'm a serial-killer :)
