Quoted from Baggy_Brad: Also, I'm a big fan of Roots Manuva both in production and his raps. The dude should've been huge.
Check out his collaboration with The Cinematic Orchestra if you haven't already - it's superb.
I'm a little confused as to the difference between hip-hop and rap, so bear with me.
I'm not so much into most hip hop (I quite prefer the Beastie Boys' "The Mix Up" to their other work), but I really like hip-hop mash ups (Rhyming In Rainbows by Hippomothamus, The Beastles, Let It Beast and Glassbreaks by DJ BC and the like), along with collaborations - The Chemical Brothers have worked with Q-tip, K-OS and Spank Rock to make some impressive stuff, lyrically and musically.
Evil Nine's breaks/genre bending style has made some great sounds with rap and the Propellerheads have produced some great beats with rhyme as well.
DJ Shadow had some good collaborations, but I think he's gone kind of downhill with his more recent stuff. It's less "out there" musically, I think.
UNKLE's "Psyence Fiction" stands out as some great experimental hip-hop and DJ Yoda tends to get some good collaborations in - another UK artist for those keeping score.
Atomic Hooligan and Mint Royale have produced some neat rap tracks, as well. Kool Keith with the Prodigy is pretty swell and the Stanton Warriors have released a few good ones as well.
I've been checking out some earlier MF Doom stuff at the request of a friend, and Prefuse 73, but haven't really managed to get into either.
Not really my thing, though. I'm more into the music than the lyrics.
how is this for a quote
