For all you Americans out there, is there anything ritualistic, or special that you and friends and/or family do?

We always watch the fireworks in town, go watch a movie at the drive in, and then come home and blow stuff up.

No, like every other holiday that happened upon America, it has been turned into an excuse to buy things like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and more recently, Cinco de Mayo. The bottom line is to line some CEO's pocket and give the rabble some new thing to celebrate.

That's every holiday. IIRC, at some point in the Roman Empire, half the days of every year were holidays, I mean holidays that were actually observed.

There were fireworks from in the park, and I live close enough that I could see them well from my porch. Only watched a few of them. Pretty boring after having seen the same shit every year.

On topic, we used to go to a big field area and watch fireworks. That stopped around 3-5 years ago though and now I usually listen to them go off on the outside.

What? Who buys shit on 4th of July? The only thing i've ever bought on 4th of July was tag so I could park somewhere to watch the fireworks. That and maybe some hotdogs or something for a bbq.

Not really.

I walked in the local parade with my friend, whose mother is currently running for mayoral office. After that, went home and had a brief cookout with my family, then went over to the post-parade party over at my friends house. There, I watched everyone get drunk while I drank soda, because I knew someone was going to have to give people rides home later in the evening as things began to wind down.

While I enjoy the opportunity to get together with my entire group of close friendsm and family, I do agree that the Fourth of July is somewhat of a cliche holiday, much like every other holiday that exists and will ever exist. It was nice to see my family though, which to me, is kinda the reason for me to participate in most holidays.

I went to my old hometown and BBQed with some friends. Then we swam in the pond and took out the little bass boat for a little bit, followed by an evening of heading to the pool and drinking beer while the local rednecks tried to light the road on fire.

It was actually a pretty good day, and would be better if I didn't have to wake up for the math test I have in 20 minutes.

Well I was trying to be more general than USA. My understanding, albeit limited, is that many revolutions "of the people" end up with dictator at charge, often worse than the last. So, independence itself is nothing to celebrate.

I was going to say the The Declaration of Independence was about independence and not human rights, but I just looked at it again and was wrong.

I did just learn that most of the original founders intended on getting rid of slavery, even a lot of the Virginians like Thomas Jefferson, but they had to avoid talking much about the issue because they were afraid that North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia would try to secede and the U.S. was way too weak to handle any problems like that back in the 1790's.

I wish they had gotten rid of it back then, but it was those southern states causing trouble again.

It just made me feel slightly better to learn that because it meant that not all the Founding Fathers were as hypocritical as some critics would have you believe. i'm a serial-killer :)
