So, some of you may remember a few months when I was trying to get out of the Army before my unit deployed to Iraq.

While I wasnĺt able to get out of the Army in time, I was able to get our with what they call a Medical Evaluation Board or MEB. They decided that my Asthma was bad enough that I could no long be expected to perform standard soldier skills, and should no longer be retained by the US Army. Even though I was retained past the end of my contract, Iĺm still glad to be getting out.

Theyĺre letting me out by putting me on something called a Temporary Disabled Retirement List, or TDRL. This means that the Army thinks that I may get better, and will pay me about $900. To keep getting paid this, Iĺll have to get a physical every 12 to 18 months, and if they find me physically fit within the next 5 years, I have the option of coming back in.

The only thing Iĺm waiting on to get out is for my paperwork to come back from Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington DC where theyĺll give me a final out date. They said that Iĺll probably be out of the Army before thanksgiving.

I donĺt know why, but itĺs suddenly terrifying to be getting out of the Army. I donĺt have a guaranteed place to live yet, or know if itĺs even possible to get back into college, know what to do for a job, or how much I need to make. Once I start going to college full time, Iĺll collect an extra paycheck for around 1500 dollars a month for the MGIB.

The average single efficiency apartment in the area is around $400-$500 a month.

http://www.uwec.edu/admissions/paying.htm

My job since Iĺve been has varied between fixing computers, fixing radios/ encryption devices both military, and civilian (Motorola 5000 series handhelds are the only civilian ones you may have heard of). I also know how to run and terminating fiber optic cable, including fusion splicing. Last but not least, I have experience installing civilian switches, and servers.

Can any of these lead to a good part-time job, or are part time jobs pretty much limited to being a waiter/ punching a cash register. Also, how much should I expect/ will I need if I expect to live on my own. I have zero experience actually having to pay for stuff, the army gives me food and a place to live. MAGUSMAGUSMAGUSMAGUS

Similar shoes, man, similar shoes.

I sign out on leave on thursday morning. I have my apartment ordeal set up, but no job to speak of. Everyone is hiring but no one is calling. The good thing is that it'll only cost me $300/month for a roof over my head with electricity, water, and cable, but I have two roommates, which is still cool because one rarely is around and the other is, well, rather eccentric.

My disability claim is being processed, and it's expected to take a damn long time, probably start collecting around March or so, but they give backpay, so that'll be like a nice little bonus. Still no fucking clue what I'm going to be rated at on disability, and I only have to get physicals every 5 years.

I'm not scared shitless, a little concerned for where I might find myself in three months, just because of the job situation, but I'm still not worried all that much. Starting to wish I never bought my car and just kept the Impreza, as I'm feeling the pinch far more often nowadays from the car on my wallet.

I'm just going to get out, get a job, and let the world take me where it pleases. Sure, it's not the best feeling in the world not knowing where you'll be in a year, let alone where I'll stand financially, but it's far better than being stuck in this archaic bullshit military system, waiting for another deployment where I see civilians making 5 times the money I do and they never leave post.

Any idea when you get out, as far as a guessed date?

She just said that it would be sometime in November, hopefully earlier in the month. She said that I should be home by thanksgiving unless something goes wrong.

That's good, I guess. Still kinda funny that your ETS was way back in August, and Jeff got out before you with myself heading out in such short order.

In light of your job questions, try telecom or cable companies for jobs. Likely you'll wind up in some piss poor position for a few months, working your way up. You could always go to the unemployment office and get into their system. I did this about 10 days ago, still have to go and turn in a list of jobs I'm interested in, which I'll do this thursday. Unemployment offices tend to show favoritism to veterans, especially limited ability or utterly disabled vets. You'll have a better chance of getting a good job through unemployment offices than just sifting through want-ads.

As far as spending money? Damn man, have you never paid a bill? Set aside the money from your pay necassary for rent and utilities. Then figure out what you're going to eat for the next two weeks and go to the store. You're going to spend more money the first time you stock your cupboards and fridge. Depending on your neighborhood, look into renters' insurance, which isn't too costly. Set your priorities though, make sure you have money set aside for necessities first before you start throwing money at beer and what-have you. Seriously, it's not that hard.

Make sure you swing by middle tennessee on your way home, man, if you have time. I need another third wheel to roll with me to karaoke night after recent developments (drama) amongst my group round here.

It seems like you could get a part time job as a IT guy at an office somewhere. Just look on craigslist under "admin/office", "systems/network", "marketing/pr/ad", or a similar category. Get a good cover letter written and you can apply to 15-20 jobs in an hour. Potential employers will respect the time you spent in the army a lot, so as long as you don't seem completely retarded it shouldn't be that hard to find a job.

Otherwise, you could try a radioshack or other type of electronics store, but that would probably pay a lot worse than a semiprofessional one.

If you get a roommate, you'll pay a lot less on rent, and maybe even get a friend out of it. Check the campus for ads of people looking for roommates. Craigslist works for this as well, but it'd be more fun to live with another student. What are you studying?

Just turned in a whole fuck ton of my TA-50 (rucksack, random shit we're issued but never used, gear in general) and somehow about $500 worth of gear fell off my records, which means it's sitting here with me in my room, just chilling, waiting to go to the pawn shop where I'll get about $150 max out of it all.

Out of $2,000 worth of gear, it's pretty entertaining how much shit I'm getting to keep because the army is fucking horrible at keeping records. Thanks again, Uncle Sam!

No, but seriously, it's going to the fucking pawn shop.

The "fa la la la, la la la la" is what really sells it.

Oh and welcome to the real world mmac, you will get over your anxiety shortly I'm sure. I think most people freak out when they're no longer under the protective custody of their parents or... uh, the US military.

I know Surt's been away for a long time, but I can't believe you people have already lost the ability to read between the lines.

The Danish government pays for his education. This doesn't happen in the US because people there fear socialism. As a result, many students have economic difficulties, and many resort to things like joining the army, which makes mmac's case quite ironic.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but I'll trust my brother-like psychic bond with Surt.

I think the army more than anything is part of what scared me. NCOs (Managers) constantly try to press it into our heads, how horrible that it is to be in "the civilian world". This is done, I think so that they can validate their own decisions to stay in a dangerous occupation that's bad for your health, and bad for personal relationships.

I don't know when exactly I'll be out of the military, can I really start filling out applications, or applying to jobs when I don't know if I can start in 3 weeks or 9?

I guess I don't even really know what I'm complaining about or confused about enough to write it effeciently on paper.

I don't feel bad that I had to join the military, to pay for college. God forbid people be required to work for their education. In that sense, I actually like the idea of required service.
