So I leave tomorrow afternoon for europe. I fly into frankfurt, spend a few days in germany, then go to austria. I'll also spend a few days in italy, switzerland, and I fly out of paris. 13 days on the continent. So anything suggestions about things to try to do/see? or suggestions about travelling?

like a typical american you're going europe hopping, which means you won't see anything really interesting, and spend most of your time traveling.

europe isnt as generic as america, you can spend those 13 days in any of the places your going to, and will still feel you havent seen even ten percent of it. so you'll be gone before you really enjoy europe.

good luck though i'm a serial-killer :) don't come visit or anything

Not everyone has months to spend on vacation. So while everything you said is true, its just a decision that needs to be made. Whether you want to spend your little time getting to know as much as possible about one place, or whether you want to spend your time getting to know a little about a lot of places. People may have different reasons for different decisions, both are understandable.

I know, the reasoning is understandable...

but it doesnt really work, the average american tourist trip down here goes something like this; Arrive ->goto hotel ->go eat/drink somewhere -> rush to a "sight", rush through the front door/entrance -> rush out again -> eat/drink somemore ->sleep ->airport

that ensures you don't actually get to know anything about where you are, not even a little bit. you dont actually experience what the country is like, and I feel thats a shame.

not that the decision is a wrong one or anything, I just think its a waste of time. we'll still overprice you on everything though.

Dutch plan chocolate theme park

The Dutch role in chocolate-making will be showcased
A Dutch businessman has launched a project to turn Roald Dahl's imaginary chocolate factory into reality.

A disused tram tunnel near the central station in Amsterdam is to be transformed into the heart of a theme park devoted to chocolate.

It will boast its own glass lift and chocolate fountain, as in the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Construction is due to start next year, with the opening planned for 2009. The cost is put at 20m euros (£14m).

Visitors will have a chance to see and touch chocolate while it is made, in what will be the only chocolate factory in the Netherlands.

Sweet dreams

For businessman Maurits Rubinstein, a major publisher of audio books in the Netherlands, this is a nine-year-old dream.

He hopes to attract about 350,000 visitors annually to the factory.

A derelict site will be turned into a children's fantasy land
Last week the city authorities gave him permission to develop the 200 metre-long tunnel near the railway station.

The success of Tim Burton's film adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005, featuring Johnny Depp as the eccentric factory owner Willy Wonka, looks set to make the project even sweeter.

Ten years ago Mr Rubinstein wrote a radio play based on the book and then thought of turning the story into a board game.

But his fascination with Charlie's adventures in the chocolate wonderland made him want to build the magic factory itself.

"It is not a dream come true but a reality that will be like a dream," he told the BBC News website.

"I always believed in the project," he says. He discovered the abandoned tunnel himself and immediately knew that it was what he needed.

The money will be partly raised through bonds that parents and grandparents can buy for their children and grandchildren.

The Netherlands is the world's leading cocoa processing country, but it does not have any factories making the final product.

Instead, it supplies the major plants of Europe with the most important ingredient - chocolate paste.

A Dutchman, Coenraad Johannes van Houten, invented the hydraulic cocoa press in 1828 which helped reduce the price of chocolate.

While Mr Rubinstein admits that the Belgians are world famous for their praline chocolate, he insists that his factory will be "the sweetest and the most beautiful in the world".

He expects children around the world to visit the underground theme park and says he cannot wait himself to plunge into the tunnel and experience the adventures of Charlie and Willy Wonka.

What this means is that I will be doing my time in Amsterdam junior year.

So do you think your week trip (or however long you spent there) in Las Vegas or whatever with GI really enabled you to see the entirety of the US? Besides the fact that everybody speaks English and uses the same money, a visit to Maine isn't going to be like a visit to New Orleans, or to Los Angeles.

Anyway, it's really quite expensive to visit Europe and most people can't afford to make a dozen trips so they try to see as much as possible in one trip.

I went on the same kind of whirlwind tour as byc, land in Frankfurt, beer gardens & Olympic stadium in Munich, depression in Dachau, pit stop for Mozart balls in Austria, gondola ride in Venice and a rub of Juliet's boob in Verona, black forest cake in the Rhine Valley, hop across the Kapellbrucke to pick up a Swiss Army knife in Lucerne, and boom back to Canada.

Obviously I'd love to go back and spend more time exploring and enjoying it there, but it's not like I can just hop a train and visit for the weekend like a continental European could. A trip like that is quite the planning endeavour with a serious investment of time and money, so I wanted to get as much out of it as possible.

So, what's the going rate of a week stay in Amsterdam anyways? I need to go somewhere that my favorite plant isn't only legal, but practically worshipped. Thinking summer of 2007.

no. thats why I also spend two weeks with her in minneapolis after going to vegas. if it were up to me, I'd have stayed another week in vegas as well, but it wasnt.

edit; and I know thats still not even a small percentage of the US, but its big, with a lot of different cities and such. just like europe, its big, you shouldnt lump all the countries together. just spend all that investing and planning and timing on one country, and you're better off.

this way its like only reading every fiftieth page of a book, some skimming is ok, but not so many pages at once, you know?

Your best bet is to just research a few places you want to see before you go. Next time you travel just stick to one place and see the entire area.

Maybe try to shack up with a hot local?

Well I fly to Wellington for 3 days for the Bledisloe Cup in a couple of weeks BEAT THAT. And I had to pay for 4 star accomodation because nothing else in the central city was available. So it's costing more than it would to stay in Sydney for a week. Shit. I'm gonna get me some hookers.
