Man, I'm a dramafag - I really like performing and theatre and musical theatre and all that - but Cats is just plain awful. I really don't like that show. Sure, the dancing is impressive and the lighting on the DVD (which I saw some of at school) is fantastic, but the show and music are crap.
Rent (I've only seen it on stage) has some good music (Seasons of Love was really, really well done. Holy crap), and the moral thing about "measure in love" and "live for today" message stuff is cool enough, but for goodness sake they've all got AIDS. It doesn't mean they're better then everyone else. I should write a musical called "Mortgage" and make it about a bunch of cancer patients who decide to stop contributing to society and think only of themselves.
Godspell is (for the most part) boring. Flat out. "Hey, here's the parables of the Bible in musical format." However, I did see this show and there was some funny stuff and Jesus was portrayed in a very positive light setting an example for humanity et cetera et cetera. I wouldn't see it again, though.
Stomp is cool as hell, though. I love beats. I don't know why they're categorized in the same group as the musicals, because they're more of a musical group than anything. And they're good. What's the beef there?
Les Misèrables, having been in the show, I really love it. Were I to watch it however, I think I'd enjoy it all the same. It's nearly opera, but there are some nice pieces of music and the characters are very well accentuated by their music. The message within it is very strong as well. I am speaking from a biased perspective, but it's a good show. The 10th anniversary special DVD with Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean and Philip Quast as Javert is worth seeing/listening to.
Rocky Horror Picture Show I have only seen in movie format. After two times through a mix of boredom and the stupid traditions surrounding all the crap that happens in the theatre made me never want to see it again.
Chicago was a good movie musical. I thought it was all fun and cool. At the very least it told a good story.
Jesus Christ Superstar succeeds, I think, because it's Judas' story, not Christ's. That's an interesting take on it. Some cool music, though.
I do not like Grease. What's the message there? "Change yourself for him." The music is awesomely fun, but the message just doesn't make it seem worthwile.
Maybe I'm a snob. Bucka bucka.
To add to the pot, Guys and Dolls is a pretty fun musical.
"One time I spilled ice cream on my pants and we had to throw them out."
"Last night I fell asleep, and when I woke up, my room was a black and white movie."
