Quote:
Pennsylvania students in private and public schools will be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the national anthem each morning under a bill signed Monday by Gov. Mark S. Schweiker.
The measure, which also requires the American flag to be displayed in every classroom when school is in session, takes effect in 60 days.

It allows students to decline reciting the pledge and saluting the flag on the basis of religious conviction or personal belief, but school officials would have to notify their parents if they chose to do so.

The legislation was introduced by state Rep. Allan Egolf, R-Perry, who said he drafted the measure after talking to veterans who told him that many schools no longer routinely recite the pledge.

Private and religious schools can opt out for religious reasons.

The Pennsylvania chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has said that it believes the parental notification requirement would discourage students from exercising their right not to participate.

Twenty-eight states require the pledge to be recited during the school day, according to the Education Commission of the States, a nonprofit national association of state education officials. Another seven encourage schools to conduct the pledge.

Although Egolf's bill was introduced before Sept. 11, 2001, the terrorist attack on that day accelerated interest in the bill, as was the case for similar measures around the country.

So, lets say I say I don't want to say it because of religious beliefs. Call home, "hello mr. and mrs. karagianigrafskretleburgerstien, your son is a dirty atheist. Enjoy!"
So, instead I say I don't say it for some other reason.
Call to the district office, "Student Dimitri is a fucking un-american terrorist, get him suspended."

So... Why the fuck should there be any religious reason for some one to opt out of saying the pledge of alliegence. So they are admitting that there are religious quarrels with the pledge.

Like we said in our conversation, we need to get married and move to Spain.

This is totally fucked up, our next president has got to be more liberal, or we're screwed.
I put this in here to fill up space in my forum sig because I am too self-concious to put anyone else's quotes down for fear of retribution and my incredibly low self-esteem, which contributes to me not thinking of any ideas for fear of them and my alias as a forum personality being shunned. I will attempt to write something clever and witty in an attempt to gain recognition in an internet forum full of people I will never meet merely to satisfy my insatiable appetite for being accepted as both a source of quality humor and as a person in general. I accept that I will ultimately fail and leave the forum, only to put my awkward teenage years behind me and grow up to be a loving and responsible father and husband until I turn 38 and am fired from my job, find out my wife is having an affair with a convicted child molester who she helped escape from prison, and I will let my car idle in the garage, slowly filling it with carbon monoxide and freeing me from my hellish prison on earth.

There was a flag in every classroom when I was in K-12. We said the pledge every morning, too. This was the same at the three different schools I went to, but I don't know if it was a Louisiana law already. I didn't really pay that much attention to it. They couldn't *make* me say it if I didn't want to. Some teachers used to get pissed off if you wouldn't stand, though.

Don't say the pledge. If they say anything to you, wipe your ass with the flag, in front of the whole class. Then you not saying the pledge won't seem like as big a deal.

They couldn't suspend you for not saying it really could they? If they do, unrightful dismissal case or something similar. If they don't, well, you'll be a rebel. Not saying the pledge will be like having a really cool scar except you wont have endured six weeks of pain and lost your favourite cup.

Spelling has never been Dimitri's strong suit.

And this is an incredibly stupid bill. It makes me glad I live in a state like Alaska, even though I do homeschool. Even if I was in school and we had a law like this, my mother wouldn't care if I didn't say the pledge.

This has nothing to do with the pledge, but I learned the other day that you can get in trouble for almost anything at school. Some girl at mine almost got suspended for wearing our rival's school colors (red and black) for our school colors day (our colors are green..and...I think white). I was wearing red and black too, but I didn't get caught.

And that bill is completely stupid.

FA, FA, FA....I understand that you're not a big smilie fan so let me help you out. If you see one in a post of mine, what I'm saying is meant to be a joke (not always a good joke, but I'm trying my best, hehe). Anyways, I'm rapidly getting the impression that you are one individual here that I shouldn't even bother trying to joke around with....what with your highly responsible role and all (or is it just because I have "NEWBIE" plastered across my avatar?). In any case, please disregard my previous post....I promise it won't happen again.

fuck that noise.

children shouldn't be forced to pledge allegiance to something that they very well don't understand, much less a government that wants to shape their minds from such an early age.

dimi, REFUSE to say the pledge if you disagree with it. if they ask you for a reason, cite the legitimate reasons why you object. call the ACLU if they try to do something retarded.

I dont see what the big fucking deal is. Your saying a pledge to your country that protects you and your freedoms. If you dont want to pledge alegiance to the US, go somewhere else and pledge your alegiance to them. Tell you what, go to some other country and whipe you ass with thier flag. Go try it in iraq or saudi arabia. I'll bet they are just jumping at the chance to let you excercise the freedoms you have over there. You dont want to respect the first country that tried to guarantee your freedom to whipe your ass with its national symbol. Your fucking crazy. Reciting the pledge in school isnt just some random act to force young children to do stuff, its to teach them about patriotism and respect to thier country.

Grow up, stop acting like a silly little rebeliouse teenager who thinks he is cool because he doesnt want to say the pledge.

how is it idolatry? You are not worshipping the flag. If you believe in god you are not putting it before god. Thats why the quote reads "for God and Country." Calling it idolatry is stupid. Its protecting your right to believe and worship as you see fit, and you should respect the symbol of that freedom by showing it some honor. Oh, wait, honor? I forgot, thats so "full of shit" on this forum.

By forcing me to say the pledge, I am getting a right taken away.
Also, theres the whole fact that I don't believe in god, and by saying the pledge, I am admitting one exists, because how can we be under god if there ins't one? They even recognize that the pledge has an issue with religion by stating that people with religious problems with the pledge have a reason not to say it.
Hmm...

Yes, they can suspend me. They really can suspend you for just about anything. Anything you say nowadays is reported to the administration. A teacher is supposed to report you if you are acting 'unamerican' in ways.
I'd prefer not having to watch every thing I say and do to make sure no one reports me somewhere.
But thats just me.

Oh and I forgot that the USA is the only country that grants people rights and freedoms.

edit: i go to school in PA, neer Philadelphia.
Also note: We've always had a flag in our classrooms, and have always had been given the opportunity to say the pledge, however never been forced to.
