Quote: Pennsylvania students in private and public schools will be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the national anthem each morning under a bill signed Monday by Gov. Mark S. Schweiker.
The measure, which also requires the American flag to be displayed in every classroom when school is in session, takes effect in 60 days.
It allows students to decline reciting the pledge and saluting the flag on the basis of religious conviction or personal belief, but school officials would have to notify their parents if they chose to do so.
The legislation was introduced by state Rep. Allan Egolf, R-Perry, who said he drafted the measure after talking to veterans who told him that many schools no longer routinely recite the pledge.
Private and religious schools can opt out for religious reasons.
The Pennsylvania chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has said that it believes the parental notification requirement would discourage students from exercising their right not to participate.
Twenty-eight states require the pledge to be recited during the school day, according to the Education Commission of the States, a nonprofit national association of state education officials. Another seven encourage schools to conduct the pledge.
Although Egolf's bill was introduced before Sept. 11, 2001, the terrorist attack on that day accelerated interest in the bill, as was the case for similar measures around the country.

So, lets say I say I don't want to say it because of religious beliefs. Call home, "hello mr. and mrs. karagianigrafskretleburgerstien, your son is a dirty atheist. Enjoy!"
So, instead I say I don't say it for some other reason.
Call to the district office, "Student Dimitri is a fucking un-american terrorist, get him suspended."

So... Why the fuck should there be any religious reason for some one to opt out of saying the pledge of alliegence. So they are admitting that there are religious quarrels with the pledge.

Well Danielle, when you turned your back on our religion and basically questioned all of our values and practically insulted our whole sense of faith and our lifestyle, we were alright with that, we let that slide. THEN you came and said that you're attracted to women, we thought that was questionable, but we could get used to it. But the day that you have pornographic videos on your computer, YOU'RE FUCKING OUT. - Danielle's parents
