So after seeing Dr. Nick's Dr. Who thread I see we have no pretense of being cool left in us, so lets nerd out and talk Star Trek.

Favorite series? For me it is some kind of weird tie between TNG and DS9. I love them both equally for different reasons, so they're not really competing. Maybe that's a cop-out. Ok, definitely it's a cop-out, but who cares?

Favorite captain is definitely Picard, though.

I haven't seen any of the others because I don't have too. TNG for me.

They don't show it but I assume with the exception of the occasional murder mystery and Robin Hood fantasy quest, everyone was using the Holodeck for virtual porn right? I think I remember an episode where Riker fell in love with a simulation but personally I could never love a simulation after the dirty things I would do to it.

Yes definitely. Actually they talk about that explicitly on DS9. Several times. There was even a time on TNG when Riker made it pretty clear that that was what he was going to do.

You kids need to watch DS9.

And Shady you need to finish TNG. Now that you have Netflix there is no excuse.

I love love loved DS9. Voyager ranks low on the list but the Doctor was the bomb and had his moments on that series. At first I didn't like Enterprise but that show grew on me as well. TNG is not my favorite but it does have some truly excellent standalone episodes. TOS is like the crazy grandpa; you chuckle at the antics but respect your elder.

I agree on the subject of TOS, though there are a few really special episodes.

I like Voyager. I think it's biggest problem is that it had so much potential that it didn't live up to. So many opportunities not taken. For what it is, though, it's still worth watching and definitely not bad. Except for the time Paris and Janeway turn into lizards and have sex.

Enterprise fell into an amazing groove in Season 4 and had it continued I am pretty sure it would have been fucking awesome.

I was making jokes at one of the older guys in my office today who loves TOS and only TOS. He called it a thinking man's show, which I balked at in comparison to TNG. He said you have to put things in perspective and consider that TOS premiered at the same time as a show called 'My Mother the Car'.

I absolutely loved DS9, same with TNG. I like the idea of Voyager, and I didn't even mind Janeway, but the rest of the cast is forgettable. How do you folks feel about Enterprise, though?

I agree that one of the big flaws with Voyager is many of the cast/characters.

Good:
The Doctor
Janeway
7 of 9

Decent enough:
Tuvok
Paris
All of the children

Had potentially but were fucked up big time:
Chakotay

Bad:
Neelix
Neelix's girlfriend
Torres

Most Improved:
Harry Kim

I feel similarly about Enterprise. Much of the cast was forgettable. Archer, Trip, and T'Pol had a cool TOS triumvirate vibe and were all good. Phlox was good. The black guy, the asian girl, and the other white guy were all totally forgettable. I didn't use their names because I don't remember them.

Agreed for the most part. The Chakotay storyline was so fucked, too. Especially the native american pandering and  his flip-flop relationship from Janeway to 7 of 9 .

I really hated Harry Kim. He was utterly useless; always getting into shit and needing help to get out of it, and never once moved up from Ensign. Torres improved a bit later on, Tuvok de-evolved. I had a huge hard-on for Neelix's girlfriend (Kes), but yeah, pretty useless character.

I liked Kes at first too because she was cute but got so boring that not even that could make her tolerable.

Harry Kim was originally my least favorite character, and he continued to be pretty high on the list for most of the series. He finally grew some edge in the final season or so and I ended up liking him well enough. For most of the series though I agree, he was horrible.

Tom Paris is right on the edge of being "okay." He could have been much more interesting. To start, this:

Quote:
Originally the writers planned to use the character of Nicolas Locarno, who was played by McNeill in the Next Generation episode "The First Duty". However, this would have required royalties to be paid to that episode's writers for every additional episode in which the Locarno character appeared.[citation needed] As a result, Voyager 's writers created an entirely new character sharing many of Locarno's attributes.

If he was Locarno instead of Paris he would have had an interesting and developed back-story. Instead he was just a kind-of-troublesome (but not really) goofball. I guess he was ok.

Yes, the Chakotay Native American pandering was insulting. It's a shame that Star Trek's only Native American character was so cartoony. And yea the sudden  7of9 relationship  was not convincing.

Basically 7of9 was the best thing that ever happened to that show. And not because of the skin-tight catsuit she wore for some reason.

DS9 is the best Star Trek series, in my opinion. Best characters, best stories, best overall story arc, a huge freaking space battle, everything was awesome. I also feel that Sisko was the best captain. Avery Brooks is a fantastic actor. But I do love me some Picard.

I definitely don't hate TNG, I think it was more timing than anything. DS9 started when I started actually watching television, and I just fell in love.

Voyager had its moments, and I desperately wanted it to be good. It just had so many shortcomings in writing and character development. Plus the series finale sucked balls. Seven of Nine was so obscenely pandering to the young horny male demographic, Chakotay's depiction was racist as hell, and people rarely grew on the show. Harry Kim suffered because apparently the writers really didn't like the actor. Lots of issues with the writers on that show.

I never got into Enterprise, I hear it got better but I just couldn't deal with it.

I think I heard that Chakotay and the writers also didn't get along, and that's partly why his character sucked too.

Sucks.

DS9 has the best team of characters and is the only one with a real story arc (and a very good one at that), so it totally wins there. But the best stand-alone stories are found in TNG I think. That's not to say that DS9 doesn't have its fair share, it most certainly does, but TNG is a different kind of magic.

I've watched most of Bearded-Riker-TNG and a good deal of isolated episodes from DS9 and Voyager. I'd like to watch DS9 but I haven't resolved to dedicate the time to it. Voyager was a good concept but a lot of the recurring aliens they encountered were really unbelievable and boring and the whole thing was ultimately solved by Deus Ex Machina. As others have mentioned, the characters were pretty weak.

What do you guys think of Q? When I was younger I thought he was really cool but now I'm more of the opinion that an omnipotent character is bad writing.

Yes, I forgot, this was the other huge problem with Voyager. Especially early on. They spent like two seasons flying through Kazon space... Most boring aliens ever.

How the hell did the come up with decently unique looking aliens like the Talaxians and then the most boring, lazy-ass aliens like the Okampa? The episode where they find Amelia Earhart and all them is hilarious. Janeway shows off Kes' ears like "Look! Her ears are, like, squiggly and shit. ALIEN!!"

Yeah like before they encountered the Borg more often, the "Great Powers" of the Delta Quadrant were a group of nomadic hunters with spaceships, and a diseased nation that hunted people for organs.

Oh fuck remember when Seven of Nine was kidnapped and forced to wrestle The Rock?

I actually loved the organ hunters. That concept gave me the chills.

But there is no redeeming the Kazon.

There are two reasons I didn't mind the Tsunksatse episode: (1. It was heavy on 7 of 9 and those are usually good, (2. It featured the actor Jeffrey Combs, one of my absolute favorite Star Trek actors (played Weyoun, Shran, Brunt, and a shit load of other characters).

On the downside, it was pretty hard to believe that with all their 24th century high-minded Federation idealism, suddenly Chakotay, Paris, Torres, Kim, and basically the entire crew were super into death match fighting tournaments.

The other great courtroom drama episode is when that evil lady comes in to try and figure out who is a Romulan spy and ends up starting a witch-hunt.
