Story

Quote from the order itself:

"IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that, the Custodian of Records shall produce to the
National Security Agency (NSA) upon service of this Order, and continue production on an ongoing daily basis thereafter for the duration of this Order, unless otherwise
ordered by the Court, an electronic copy of the following tangible things: all call detail
records or "telephony metadata" created by Verizon for communications (i) between
the United States and abroad; or (ii) wholly within the United States, including local
telephone calls...
...Telephony metadata includes comprehensive communications routing information,.
including but not limited to session identifying information (e.g., originating and
terminating telephone number, International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) number,
International Mobile station Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, etc.), trunk identifier,
telephone calling card numbers, and time and duration of call. Telephony metadata
does not include the substantive content of any communication, as defined by 18 U.S.C. ? 2510(8), or the name, address, or financial information of a subscriber or customer.
IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that no person shall disclose to any other person that
the FBI or NSA has sought or obtained tangible things under this Order,..."

Enjoy your national security, everyone.

To be clear, this order does not include the content of calls (though there may be other orders, the only time we get any information like this is through ever scarcer leaks - and there are non-verified reasons to think that there is such a collection process), only everything else about them.

I just want to be clear that this leaked document does not show that.

The document does show, to quote a friend, "...that this is the systematic collection of the private communications of any American citizen, without a warrant or reasonable cause, violating the 4th amendment..."

I'm going to need to move to Canada eventually. I'm getting tired of the police state bullshit we have going on here.

I'd rather move to Iceland.

Pretty sure Canada already has something similar in place. I recently received a notice from a medical supplies company that I order from asking me to sign a contract that would sell my medical information to third party companies. It was set up as a "we need to update your information" until I read the fine print, and also noticed that it's a completely voluntary program (meaning that it's not at all necessary to join their program, although it's framed as a "we need to update this in order to keep sending you the supplies you need to live"). They also include a clause which allows the company to change the terms and conditions of the agreement at any given time without warning.

So, I'm not signing it. Pretty much every large company is full of unethical garbage, and it's not okay.

No, but they're terrorists! Or, they harbor terrorists? Or no, they fund them or something. No wait, it's the nuclear arms thing. It's cause they hate Israel and are led by a mentally unbalanced psychopath who at any second will launch nuclear bombs with no concept of mutually assured destruction. NO! It's 'cause they're interfering with Syria, or arming the rebels government or something. Proxy war or something. They bought some scary aluminum tubes magnets which is proof they are building scary weapons.

Yup, I think that about sums up Iran As Seen On TV.

edit: In case anyone misunderstands this - I'm definitely not saying that Iran's government isn't fucked up and poorly managed and dictatorial and bad for it's people. I'd be very pleased to see them able to shake loose the regime (without a war). What I am saying is that the image we get in our media is very sloppy, silly, and full of fear-mongering.

Apparently my idea of Iceland was a good idea, as that's the country from which the leaker is now seeking Asylum.

Quote:
He views his best hope as the possibility of asylum, with Iceland – with its reputation of a champion of internet freedom – at the top of his list. He knows that may prove a wish unfulfilled.

Oh, and by the way, the leaker has revealed himself.

And if you haven't been paying attention, there has been a new break in these stories every day. Here's the whole list so far:

It's getting way more attention than important things usually do. Most of the time they interview some self-proclaimed National Security Expert™ who tells us how great the programs are and how Edward Snowden needs to be tried for treason, but the coverage is still significantly better than normal.

There are people who are mad. There are of course lots of people who would defend the state actions no matter what the news was, i'm pretty sure if we found out there was a Ministry of Love policing thoughtcrime you'd still have people on TV saying "WELL DO YOU WANNA GET TERRORIST ATTACKED??"

Still this stuff is too big to ignore, and it isn't being ignored, so that's good.

Is anyone else getting a weird feeling that this leak is a little....embellished?

Basically every company involved has come out and said "No." which is a bit more emphatic then they usually are.

Look how carefully worded each of those No's have been. They are trying to cover their asses. When the warrantless wiretapping scandal happened under Bush, the companies were under fire for not denying the government access as they were compelled to do under US law. To avoid that happening again they asked that US law instead make it illegal for them to deny it, rather than actually denying it.

The outrage here is as if anyone here had anything worth covering up.

Most rational people wouldn't have the nuts to stand up to any government agency and tell them to fuck off if they were pounding at your door for information. Its not unlike gun owners jumping up and down about 2nd amendment rights. They'll make a big show in front of reporters, but, if the government did show up to collect their arms, most of them would hand them over without a fight.
