I think it's time for Vissario to call me a dirty hippie again.

I went down to the protest here last weekend. It was kinda cool, they were doing the micless talking-repeating thing that they do in New York even though they weren't required too. It got kinda funny too. Germanís extensive use of subordinate clauses makes it uniquely unsuited to this method of non-electronic amplification, but the sentiment of solidarity with the forcibly unamplified denizens of Zuccotti Park was nevertheless appreciated.

Later news reports placed the number demonstrating at around 6000. As has been the case with the Occupy Wall St movement in general, there wasnít a clear direction or focal point of the protest.

After several hours of camping out in front of the Reichstag it became clear that the police were not going to allow us to continue overnight, at which point everyone linked arms and sat down, making themselves as immovable as possible. The police (for the most part gently) extracted us and carried us to the side of the road, and the occupation gradually came to an end for the night.

This weekendís protest at the Reichstag lacked the passion and personal edge you see in videos of the New York protests (and definitely you know, Oakland). Germanyís youth is already pretty deeply politicized in a way that Americaís really isnít, and the Occupy Wall Street protests here just donít possess the exciting veneer of the unknown that they seem to in New York. Itís more of the same; Berlinís career protesters trotting out the same tired Gegen Atomkraft (stop nuclear power plants) poster they brought to the last march.

Anyway after Oakland I feel like the situation has changed a little bit... what do you all think about it? Is anyone else protesting? I'm going to NY in a couple weeks and I will definitely stop by Zuccotti park and #OWS for a while

There's a movement here but it's too damn cold for me to actually want to go out and protest. So I just sit inside and bitch about the government on the internet. #Occupyreddit

I didn't make to Occupy Montreal because I had a thing that day and didn't care too too much. I generally agree with what this whole thing i about and I read a lot of reddit so it comes up a lot. I think this picture best describes how the megalith that supposedly runs the country is dealing with this.

I'm totally down with the occupy wall street thing.

Ice, it's a good thing you moved. If you were in Oakland you might be dead or dying right now.

I've been to the Minneapolis one three, or four times since it started on I think the second(maybe later). I think there couldn't have been more than 200 people there one of the times I've visited, and perhaps it was 800 another time. These are merely guesses though.

Occupation isn't a sustainable tactic though. Government Plaza in downtown Minneapolis is being occupied by police consent with the agreement that no sleeping shelters be erected. As per the RNC here in 2008, and other incidents I've viewed/heard of the police aren't the, err, most amicable here. It was snowing in NYC yesterday. Eventually with occupations so much energy is kept in holding a space that it becomes ineffective. At least from my experience/observations.

This is a beautiful thing though. An unbelievably beautiful thing. Everyday I read of more happening around the nation, around the world that grates joyously with my heart. It spurns a new hope within me. I think this is the first step in moving forward as a united species.

I read about that protest in the WSJ and I've got to say that it's all pretty absurd. That is, the notion that these people have that they will change how government and corporate America works with a big walk around. Even motivated citizenry nowadays can't change the larger social forces at work in this world anymore.

We are slaves to the bankers and politicians who run our check accounts and our government welfare, and not even necessarily in that order. To them we owe our grudging obedience and hatred. Our enforcers are the police. Our overseers are the endless amounts of voice and video monitors you find everywhere around you in your day.

Not to be cliche, but we've gone fairly far into the future to 1984 and there is little turning back now.

And yes, you are a hippie ice. Get a real job.

Being a cynic about the state of the world is illogical. It is giving up before even bothering to try anything. Utterly pathetic. It is that attitude that led us where we are today. The cancer cells that've decayed us. The power elites crave on that cynicism. They rely on the people to be cynics, not to have an ounce of a clue one way or another about politics. The less people watching, the easier it is to pull the wool over the eyes. You know this though which makes the scene all the more depressing.

It is fascinating to be on the sidelines for this (and have enough luxury to do so). My dad and I may head out to join Occupy Toronto for a day or two in the coming weeks (I'll definitely be there for a couple of days later this month). We support the protests, but the most I've done for them is ordered a pizza.

I feel like basically no one disagrees with the message, even the people who really want to and claim to hate the protests. That might be symptom of the message being at times extremely general though.

It's really not a terribly controversial message and it's something I've been talking about for years now with anyone that would listen. The politics are getting in the way but that's entirely the point I think. The political system is complicit by design.

I hate to bting up something that may sound partisan (it's really not a partisan issue per se) but it really does make Fox News transparent when they pushed so hard for the Tea Party last year and denounce these protests as class warfare.

Exactly. The fundamentals of the tea party movement are all over this occupy thing and for some reason a lot of tea party people are/FOX news have decided to hate on it.
