I think it's time for Vissario to call me a dirty hippie again.
I went down to the protest here last weekend. It was kinda cool, they were doing the micless talking-repeating thing that they do in New York even though they weren't required too. It got kinda funny too. German’s extensive use of subordinate clauses makes it uniquely unsuited to this method of non-electronic amplification, but the sentiment of solidarity with the forcibly unamplified denizens of Zuccotti Park was nevertheless appreciated.
Later news reports placed the number demonstrating at around 6000. As has been the case with the Occupy Wall St movement in general, there wasn’t a clear direction or focal point of the protest.
After several hours of camping out in front of the Reichstag it became clear that the police were not going to allow us to continue overnight, at which point everyone linked arms and sat down, making themselves as immovable as possible. The police (for the most part gently) extracted us and carried us to the side of the road, and the occupation gradually came to an end for the night.
This weekend’s protest at the Reichstag lacked the passion and personal edge you see in videos of the New York protests (and definitely you know, Oakland). Germany’s youth is already pretty deeply politicized in a way that America’s really isn’t, and the Occupy Wall Street protests here just don’t possess the exciting veneer of the unknown that they seem to in New York. It’s more of the same; Berlin’s career protesters trotting out the same tired Gegen Atomkraft (stop nuclear power plants) poster they brought to the last march.
Anyway after Oakland I feel like the situation has changed a little bit... what do you all think about it? Is anyone else protesting? I'm going to NY in a couple weeks and I will definitely stop by Zuccotti park and #OWS for a while
