Well, 165 is 8% of 2056. But yeah, that doesn't sound like a very important statistic.

I'll admit that I know what a healthy weight is imperically but I have no idea what it really looks like. It's impolite to ask people how much they weigh.

That's true. It's hard to visualise what an ideal weight is, especially since it varies by height and gender. And you can't just be like "hey Nick how much do you weigh????" That and people do carry their weight differently--someone the same height as me could look bigger but weigh less simply because their weight is placed differently on their body. Or someone way shorter could wear the same size as you and look huge because it looks like there's more weight on the body than you have. It makes me think of a mind trick question my third grade class was given: which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks? Of course we know the answer is that they weigh the same, but it's easy to be tricked by the idea that you know the tangential effects of an object.

A pound of bricks weighs slightly more because it's closer to the ground.

Weight is just the force an object applies, the bricks will certainly have more mass in your model, especially if you take into account buoyancy forces

I think he's saying that because the bricks are laying on the ground they will weigh more because they're closer to the earth or something. I don't really know that much about physics. Of course, it's dumb because we are only told that they are a pound of feathers. There's no real way to measure them unless they're on a scale (and the bricks would have to be on a scale too) so his point is moot.

Perhaps you mean density? Mass is an intrinsic quality of matter. Whether you are on the moon, in space, or on Earth, your mass will remain the same.

But a 'pound' is unlike a kilogram in that it is a measure of weight, or force, not mass.

I am with you on this one Phil. While it probably wouldn't make good conversation on a first date or while waiting in line to pay for something, as long as it is relevant to what is being discussed it isn't a taboo subject. It also depends on who is asking.

I think Ztolk meant that a kg of feathers has a larger volume then a 1-kg brick, and therefore the center of mass of the bag of feathers will be further away from the contact point. Since the gravitational acceleration varies ever so slightly on the elevation on the Earth's surface, it is understandable that the brick will experience a "g"-constant that is very close but slightly larger than the feathers. So the brick would "weigh" more.

But like Dimi said, the question is phrased "what weighs more, a pound of feathers or bricks?". Since pound is already a measure of "weight", Ztolk's argument about volume/center-of-mass would be redundant because the question already answered itself. If the question is "what weighs more, a kg of so and so", then the brick would weigh more.

Yeah, what t said. The confusion between what you and mutza were talking about seemed to stem from the incorrect phrasing of ztolk's original post (serious question: do canadian's look at Imperial System ever in science/engineering?) so I figured i'd go back and address that.

So like what conversations do you get into constantly where you need to know the weight of everyone involved? Like, do you ask everone what they weigh before getting in the car in order to save gas? I'm having some trouble with this one. Maybe an example would help?

I'm going to try and beat a dead horse here, and I'm also going to avoid using the metric systems.

The units of Mass will therefore be the slug

an object's "weight" describes the force an objects exerts and pounds are a unit force so therefore everything is kosher (you can not as has been mentioned, describe an object's weight in Kg)

so, all things being equal
1 lb = 1 slug*1ft/s^2

So, the feathers will effectively be spaced slightly farther away then the lead and therefore have slightly smaller G (<32.2ft/s^2) in addition the feathers are much less dense so they will take up much more space and experience far greater buoyancy forces counteracting gravity, as a result it will take a larger number of slugs of feathers then slugs of lead to weigh 1lb

Our coach regularly weighed us in High School and gave us strength goals based on our weight. I also played football.

In addition to that, it just seems to come up in conversation more and more regularly as it is getting trendy to live a more healthy life.
