A lot of people have mentioned wanting to get in shape. So I propose this contest over the summer.

First, go out and run a mile and time yourself. Post the time here.

In three months time, time yourself again. Whoever shaves the most time off their mile wins.

A few of you have mentioned that you'd like to do this. Any takers? The winner can get a prize or forum power or something.

What if you put the incline at the highest setting? I run on a treadmill because I can't stand running with a shirt on, and I don't feel I look good enough to run shirtless outside yet vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Either way I can do it in 9:40 for sure because that is how long it takes at 10 km/h, although I'm sure I can do it in 8:03 (12km/h, highest speed my crappy treadmill does). If I wasn't running on a treadmill and it was just 1 mile though, I could probably do it in 6 minutes.

If enough people will only do treadmill (it's so nice outside!) then I'll ask around and find a system to make it equivalent. Probably just an incline thing.

i'm definitely in, will do this on the weekend. ALSO it's horrible weather outside, but i'll still do it there! Because I hate treadmills and find it makes me concentrate on nothing but how tired my legs are getting.

I think your time is just fine for someone who doesn't actively work on running.

I've never run for speed before. Even when I was in really good shape and would run a lot, it was all for distance. It should be interesting working on this (if I actually do).

edit: because i'm a nerd, I just graphed my results and plan to keep track of my times every time I run, graphing each run and the total progress.

Running distance is a challenge for me. I think I'm just a naturally gifted sprinter. Over short distances I've only ever found three people who could beat me. I've got acceleration out the ass but no endurance. Even when I was exercising regularly I still couldn't keep up a running pace for very long.

I was going to go for a run, but the outdoor track is under construction and the indoor track is being used for exams. I started running along the sidewalk, but the street I was on was up a giant hill, so I turned around and ran on the treadmill. It took 8:33 to run a mile, with the incline set to "2" starting about four minutes in. I don't consider this my actual mile time, because treadmill isn't quite like running.

My leg hurts.
