Quoted from Dr. Huxtable: This bill pisses me off. Probably for much the same reason it pisses ice off.
My only hope is that passing a bill with "Healthcare Reform" in the tile will make it easier to pass real reform in the future.
I'm not holding my breath though.
You are aware that just about every single progressive movement in this country has come in incremental steps over decades, right?
That's not to say that you're somehow wrong to be disappointed in the bill (hell, I'm disappointed in certain aspects of it, lack of a public option primarily). However, including something like the public option would have invariably been the death of this bill. Had this bill been defeated, it would have halted health care reform discussions for years to come: something which I don't feel is beneficial to anyone. Libertarians and conservatives would herald its defeat as nothing short of cheesy AMERICA HAS SPOKEN rhetoric, thus implicitly stating that AMERICANS HAVE PLUGGED THEIR EARS to continued debate on health care reform.
As far as continued reform, that's going to be largely up to whomever controls the government over the next couple decades. We could conceivably have legislation to create a public option and other various modifications to this bill within the next 10-15 years, should the reality of this bill be shown to improve peoples' lives and not turn us into a Maoist state.
Frankly, I think this bill is a step in the right direction, even though its admittedly incomplete and not entirely perfect.
