[b]VANCOUVER WINTER OLYMPICS 2010, BITCHES

Welcome to the Vancouver fucking Olympics, baby. First off, let's start this party off by celebrating whats at stake here...

Fucking TIGHT. I love the design. I don't know what it is about the "deformed wavy" shape as opposed to the classic circular design, but I really like it.

Now let's all remind ourselves about what happened last time, AND JUST REMEMBER HOW MUCH THIS THREAD HAS LACKED CRAPPY GIF COMPRESSIONS SO FAR

OLYMPIC HOCKEY!

Clearly a four horse race...Canada, Sweden, Russia, and USA. Alot of people are saying Russia was the frontrunner for the Gold because of their dynamic forwards (Malkin, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk)...but with 2/3rds of that list injured right now.

USA is a really youthful club this year, with tons of NHL talent, but not alot of guys over the age of 25. I don't see USA hitting the gold medal matchup this year because of their youth and inexperience, but for 2014 in Russia...they will be a SERIOUS contender. I'll talk about Team USA on a later date.

But for right now...it's Team Canada talk.

Here's my team:
Code:

Nash - Crosby - Iginla
Heatley - Thornton - St. Louis
Smyth - Lecavalier - Marleau
Morrow - Richards - Doan

Niedermeyer - Pronger
Weber - Boyle
Phaneuf - Green
(Buowmeester or Seabrook as 7th D on bench)

Fleury
Luongo
Brodeur

Leaving a few guys off the roster because of slow starts to the season...mainly Getzlaf and Eric Staal. The third line is largely because of the hot starts to the season for Marleau and Smyth...but if either of them start to slip up then they will be the first to be axed.

Top 3 lines all have elite scoring potential, and then line number 4 is the shutdown line. You generally number them like I have above...but depending on the game outcome, I could see the 4th line getting the most ice-time. Although I'm open to arguments on the 2nd and 3rd line...I'm 100% confident that the 1st and 4th line I wrote above are locked in stone. The fourth line is going head-to-head against Ovechkin...minute for minute.

The real show is Canada's women's hockey team. I think they might be the most dominant team in all of sports. Maybe not the most talented given the talent pool of their competition, but the most dominant.

I'm looking forward to luge/bobsled/skeleton, etc. this year. I love that shit. I love the Olympics in general though, even when they make me feel like I've done exactly nothing with my life.

I made my Team Canada roster, so now I'll make my team USA:

Code:

Kane - Gomez - Parise
Brown - Kessel - Ryan
Backes - Stastny - Booth
Oshie - Kesler - Byfuglien
(Langenbrunner on bench)

Ryan Suter - Erik Johnson
Mike Komisarek - Ryan Whitney
Brooks Orpik - Jack Johson
(Brian Rafalski on bench)

Miller
Anderson
Thomas

So with the exception of the goaltending and SCott Gomez, almost every single player is below the age of 25. They aren't quite READY yet to contend for gold.....but it's pretty obvious from the young elite-talent they have that they will be a contending team soon.

I left off several "dynasty" USA players...like Drury and Modano. I really think the USA team is using this years games as a staging point for the next four years of world championship leading up to 2014 Olympics. Clearly Rafalski, Drury, Modano...maybe even Scott Gomez will all be too old to be effective by 2014...so it's definately in USA Hockey's best interest to role 4 lines made of youth so they can gain the experience.

Kane and Parise are elite talents. Dustin Brown is one of the most underrated players in the league...and I assure you that you are gonna love this guy come Olympics.

On top of that, it's not exactly a soft team either. Backes can hit...Brown can hit...Oshie can hit, Byfuglien can hit, Kesler can hit...even Bobby Ryan can play physical. Once again though...none of these guys are in their "prime" yet, so it may be a learning curve in 2010....but I really like the makeup of Team USA core.

I wouldn't leave out the Czech Republic and Finland, maybe Slovakia too.

All they need is to have one really good day to beat Canada or Russia in a playoff game, it's not likely but not extremely unlikely either.

The same applies to Sweden, although Sweden probably has better players than the 3 underdog-teams i mentioned.
Still not nearly as many world-class players as Canada, Russia and USA though.

Do you think Gustavsson is gonna be backing up King Henry in Vancouver??

I was trying to think of the second best Swedish goalie in the league, and so far big Gus is all I can think of.

Well there was Tellqvist, but apparently he has moved to the Russian league now.
And he wasn't very good i suppose.

There's Johan Hedberg in Atlanta, but also not very good.

Erik Ersberg might have potential, he's had impressive stretches in Los Angeles.

I have no idea who they'll pick as first backup goalie, they might go with an older guy with a lot of national team experience.

In the absence of the NHL-players right now the national team is going with Tellqvist and Stefan Liv, so Tellqvist might be a good bet.

Big Gus played for the national team too already, though...

EDIT: Wait...didn't he? I can't find any sources that say he did, but for some reason I think he did when he was playin for Farjestads

Pretty impressive actually. They'll need to scoop up a few more players to fill in for injuries though. Alfredsson is definately not going to play, and Nik Kronwall won't be playing either. My choice would be Mikael Samuellson and Victor Hedman to take those two spots, unless there's somebody more equipped playing in Russia or in the SEL.

All in all it's fairly solid with NHL talent, and is definately a medal contender.

Team Canada looks pretty strong, but I think Russia is probably the most dangerous team in the Olympics this year. Taking a penalty against them is practically surrendering a goal.

Scratch that idea about adding Mikael Sameulsson to Team Sweden:
Quote:
Another notable absentee is Vancouver's Mikael Samuelsson, who pulled no punches in discussing the snub.

"Probably going to get in trouble for this, but they can go (expletive deleted) themselves," was his reaction following the Canucks win over Calgary Sunday night.

Let's predict this years olympic medal table.

Off the top of my head i'd say USA, Russia, Germany, Austria, Norway.
But i'm sure there are lots of nations i didn't consider that will be in the top 5.

There can't be much doubt that USA and Russia will be top 2 though.

Edit: Actually i just looked at the medal table from 2006 and Germany topped it with USA second and Austria third, i had no idea the medal distribution of winter olympics was this even.

As far as total medal count goes, Canada was third last winter olympics with 23, behind USA 25 and Germany 29. The Canadian Olympic Committee has been advertising alot that it's a realistic goal for them to get the most this year, so I'm hoping that happens. But we'll see.
