I was just wondering how many of you know a second language? or even a third, fourth ect.
Well apart from the fact of it being useful if you ever visit that country, or interact with people that can only speak that language has it helped you career wise at all?

In the first three years at our highschool we are forced to learn a language (Japanses, french or German) because of the way they structure our learing grades wise. Our teacher is going on alot about how knowing a second language (well Japanses in this case) will help after we complette school. Be good to have on resumes and help with our career, depending on what it is.

So pretty much just wondering who know other languages, and if they have helped at all or have been much use to know.

I spent 5 years in French Immersion, took an oral exam, and graduated high school with a certificate that says I'm functionally bilingual. Whee.

Took German in college but I have no reason to speak it and forgot quite a bit of it.

Has it helped me career wise, not in the least (so far). Once I got to give directions to someone in French. Is it useful? I suppose so.

I've taken 4 years of Spanish at my school, though I'm nowhere near being fluent. I can read and write most spanish, but speaking and comprehending is a bitch. My school's spanish curriculum sucks massively and the teacher can't even speak the language fluently, so I'm screwed. I just want to be able to test out of the foreign language requirement at college so I can learn it elsewhere during the summer.

I speak Dutch and English fluently, I can read Italian, Spanish, French and German adequately.

it helps a lot, I have to work with people from all over Europe, and its easy for them to send their emails in their native language, that way there won't be many communication mistakes on their part. Except those Hungarians. I dont know WHAT they where on when they made up that language but I don't know if I'm reading it from the wrong way, or their emails come in upside down or whatever, I'm bloody clueless.

Its good for your resume I suppose, although I've never had to show mine.

The only language I have been forced to take during school was French...and I only took it when I absolutely had to (to graduate high school). I am far from bilingual, however!

I worked in the tourist sector for the summers in highschool and university and have had to deal with some Canadians who speak only French and i have not been able to converse with them, but I have been able to manage a few words to make things flow a little more smoothly.

In high school, I never really had any interest in learning a second language, but after finishing an undergrad and seeing a little bit of the world, makes me want to try and learn French for real (and one of those gov jobs would be sweet!) The problem is...I don't have the ambition to expend that much energy nor the time to learn a second language....when sometimes I still stumble with the first!
I've learned one thing and that's to quit worrying about stupid things. You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You'll never remember class time, but you'll remember the time you wasted hanging out with your friends. So, stay out late. Go out with your friends on a Tuesday when you have a paper due on Wednesday. Drink till sunrise. Spend money you don't have. The work never ends, but college does..."

I speak Spanish as my native language, and English as my second language. If I were just ONE year younger I would have had to take French at school, and despite my hatred for the French language, that would have been cool.

I can almost understand written and to a lesser extent spoken Portuguese, Catalan and Italian, and a bit of written French as well, but this is no achievement since they are all similar to Spanish in one way or another.

I'm trying to learn German on my own but I don't have a dictionary so I have a very limited vocabulary, although I know the basics (the most basic basics, I mean) of the grammar. If I end up changing my major I'll take both German and French at uni. Back in the day I took three years of Latin but I have forgotten much of it. I can slur a full sentence every now and then, though, and understand it almost decently.

I'm very interested on languages in general and I've taken a look into the basic grammar of Hebrew and Gothic (and, well, Old English and Old High German, but I never went beyond reading a book or two on their grammars). I can write and read the Latin, Hebrew and Greek alphabets, and a couple years ago I almost learned Cyrillic but I forgot quickly.

I don't really expect to gain a professional advantage from any of these languages, other than English, unless I manage to learn German and change my major.

I can read, write, and speak English and French fluently. My primary language is English, but I also took French Immersion for all thirteen years of school so I graduated with a bilingual certificate. Around here people speak Acadian French which is pretty easy to understand, but if I watch Qubec French TV or talk to people from France at work, it takes a lot of effort to make sense of things.

I also know the following Spanish phrase: Uno servesa por favor translating to "One beer, please". I used this one constantly in the Dominican.

My mother speaks French and Spanish fluently because she was born and raised in Mexico and her Mother is French. She tried to teach me both and I can't speak either to save my life. One of these days I'll go stay with my French relatives and learn the damn language, but I haven't yet.

I've taken French for two years and am fairly good at it (enough to carry on a basic few minute conversation).

I also took Spanish for two years during middle school and actually ended up not only learning it but remembering most of it, and now I can speak Spanish fluently.

In my school, its a requirement that you take Latin for a semester, so I'll end up learning basic Latin at most.

I'm interested, though, in learning Italian and Arabic. It'd be so awesome to write in Arabic.

I took 3.5 years of Spanish in high school, and if I were ever dropped into the middle of nowhere in Spain I know enough to get to the nearest airport and get the fuck out.
I'm still chipping away at Latin. Don't know enough vocab to consider myself fluent, but I'm getting there.

English is my first language, and I am fairly good at French and Spanish, even though occasionally I have to use a dictionary or ask what an idiomatic phrase would mean. I also taught myself a bit of Latin back in 6th grade and then started that again off and on since then, so I know a little bit, and I have studied German off and on since 8th grade. I also took New Testament Greek at my church but I have forgotten most of that, except I can pronounce it all.

I also know how to say "to play with yourself" in Danish (don't know spelling) because the Danish guy at our school last year taught me that. what am i

Being south American, my first language is Spanish.

I took the basic badass English of high school, and a bit of German during Highs school too.
During university I had 3 useless levels of English, and a semester of German.

I have learned a little bit of English from , ...I dunno, daily life, and INTL. This is my second language because English is the language of medical literature and Interenet.

Next semeter I'm gonna learn German again, and ok..well, let's call it my third language.
