Second paragraph to see if you might be interested...
I love HBO, I've been watching shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, OZ, The Sopranos,The Wire, Deadwood and Sex and the City for years...The only 2 shows I never really got into were 6 feet under and for the entire first seasone, Carnivale. Now that I've spent tons of money on HBO in demand (eight additional bucks a month) and Carnivales new season just started Sunday, the week before hand me and my friend Chris figured we'd check it out. The entire first season was on In Demand to catch people up...so I watched the first episode...from there on in I was pretty hooked.
Carnivale is fucking weird, it takes its inspiration from folk like Lynch without trying to confuse you too too much. It takes place in the 30's and it's about a young Man named Ben Hawkings who has the ability to heal and even resurect...but the catch is that if he gives life he has to take it from something else. After bens mother (who has considered him a devil and would not let him touch her) dies of an illness he's met by a traveling Carnival run by the backwards talking midget from Twin Peaks! They take him in and he's given a job. He soon finds out that this group of wackos didn't pick him up by coincedence. He finds that his long lost father "Scutter" who had the same power as him used to travel with this band, and he was less than liked. Ben is compelled to learn more, and throught the season he does. But that's not it...
While all this is happening and Ben is dealing with Carnies, history and a power he doesn't understand..his dreams and nightmares are shared with another. Brother Justin, a minister in California. Justin dreams of Scutter and shares dreams with ben who he has never even met. He has visions that he can only conceive as messages from God. In his righteous quest to preach the word to migrants he discovers he has the power to read minds, to reveal sins to wicked men, and cause physical harm with thought alone. While attempting to do Gods will, he finds himself leaving behind a path of destruction...with each episode his sanity slips and his connection with Ben Hawkins, though they never meet in season 1, becomes more and more apparent. Brother Justin becomes an unlikely villain. At the opening of season two our beloved midget (with secrets and subplots of his own) goes on a speil about about a Demon who tried to escape his fate, only to cause death and misery wherever he ran. While Brother Justin is clearly the Dark to Bens Light...this pretty much applies to both.
Carnivale is pretty much a cult hit, it's often overlooked by even the strongest HBO fans. I think this is because the supernatural was never advertised for the first series, we all pretty much figured it was just some dumb show about carnies in the 1930's. If any of this sounds remotely interesting to you, I urge you to look up the Season 1 DVD set and to try to catch Season 2 on HBO if possible. The opening of season two picks up immediately where season 1 left off...so it's important to watch the whole thing. It's fucking expensive. 12 hours worth of show will do that...

If I can bludgeon a hooker to death and burry her in the desert, I sure as shit can punch a little girl and steal her shoes.
