Second paragraph to see if you might be interested...

I love HBO, I've been watching shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, OZ, The Sopranos,The Wire, Deadwood and Sex and the City for years...The only 2 shows I never really got into were 6 feet under and for the entire first seasone, Carnivale. Now that I've spent tons of money on HBO in demand (eight additional bucks a month) and Carnivales new season just started Sunday, the week before hand me and my friend Chris figured we'd check it out. The entire first season was on In Demand to catch people up...so I watched the first episode...from there on in I was pretty hooked.

Carnivale is fucking weird, it takes its inspiration from folk like Lynch without trying to confuse you too too much. It takes place in the 30's and it's about a young Man named Ben Hawkings who has the ability to heal and even resurect...but the catch is that if he gives life he has to take it from something else. After bens mother (who has considered him a devil and would not let him touch her) dies of an illness he's met by a traveling Carnival run by the backwards talking midget from Twin Peaks! They take him in and he's given a job. He soon finds out that this group of wackos didn't pick him up by coincedence. He finds that his long lost father "Scutter" who had the same power as him used to travel with this band, and he was less than liked. Ben is compelled to learn more, and throught the season he does. But that's not it...

While all this is happening and Ben is dealing with Carnies, history and a power he doesn't understand..his dreams and nightmares are shared with another. Brother Justin, a minister in California. Justin dreams of Scutter and shares dreams with ben who he has never even met. He has visions that he can only conceive as messages from God. In his righteous quest to preach the word to migrants he discovers he has the power to read minds, to reveal sins to wicked men, and cause physical harm with thought alone. While attempting to do Gods will, he finds himself leaving behind a path of destruction...with each episode his sanity slips and his connection with Ben Hawkins, though they never meet in season 1, becomes more and more apparent. Brother Justin becomes an unlikely villain. At the opening of season two our beloved midget (with secrets and subplots of his own) goes on a speil about about a Demon who tried to escape his fate, only to cause death and misery wherever he ran. While Brother Justin is clearly the Dark to Bens Light...this pretty much applies to both.

Carnivale is pretty much a cult hit, it's often overlooked by even the strongest HBO fans. I think this is because the supernatural was never advertised for the first series, we all pretty much figured it was just some dumb show about carnies in the 1930's. If any of this sounds remotely interesting to you, I urge you to look up the Season 1 DVD set and to try to catch Season 2 on HBO if possible. The opening of season two picks up immediately where season 1 left off...so it's important to watch the whole thing. It's fucking expensive. 12 hours worth of show will do that...

Carnivale is one of my favorite shows on HBO. It kind of sucked that we had to wait like a year and a half for season two. I just hope they don't turd it up like they did OZ. I thought OZ was a great show as well, the last two seasons went to shit, though. Carnivals season opener looked kind of iffy,I hope it picks up later.

Sopranos and Six Feet Under are also shows that I watch quite often.

I've been watching Carnivale since the beginning, though I don't remember the first season in much detail. I agree that it is weird, but it is for this reason - mixed in with the amazing sets and developments - which has caused me to enjoy watching this show. Infact, it is one of the only shows I still watch on TV.

Looks like an interesting show, they'll probably begin to send it here in some years.

But sex & the city, is one show i truly hate.

Well they picked up directly after the end of season 1 so it has a new climax to build on, I don't think it's iffy though. The high point of this episode was Justin pealing his face to reveal hawkins. This one promises to have more action and developement because Justin and Hawkins, just in this episode alone, have established that they both need to find scutter...one before the other...and kill him.

The best part about having HBO on demand is that it catches you up with an entire season of a show before the new one airs...HBO also runs the season daily to build up for the new one, but I prefer to watch whenever I want on HBO on demand because I have shit to do. Also the new episodes are logged the day after they premeire so I can watch those whenever I want too. It's worth it if you have Brighthouse.

I guess that's a good call. I could never get into 6 feet under. I am, however, bracing myself for season 2 of Deadwood which has been advertised for March.

OZ expired when Audebesi was killed in that awesome season finale, after that there was just nothing left. They should have stopped there.

As I don't have a TV, much less HBO, I haven't seen most of these shows. From the reviews and comments people have made about them, they sound good, but I'm not much of a TV person, so I haven't taken the time to watch them yet.

One show I have seen on HBO (by way of somebody showing me the DVD of it) is Mr. Show. I really like it, and think it's one of the most inventive and funny sketch comedy programs out there.

A lot of people have the right idea, HBO sucks for hollywood films. Not only does it play movies you probably don't want to see, when it plays something you do it plays it over and over and over. The ONLY reason I have HBO is because of the original series and movies...most of which kick the shit out of anything Hollywood can spit at you.

HBO also has the ability to show as much T & A as they would like, at just about any hour.

This allows their programming to be more entertaining, and to a point, more realistic.

Ugh, catch up with Six Feet Under. That is the best show on television right now. The last season was a bit of a dissappointment, but the first few were some of the best written and acted things I've ever seen.

I liked last season just as much as the others.

Tell me that the episode when David gets carjacked wasn't the most intense thing you saw on television all year.

It seemed like the last season was lacking in the real life aspect and replaced with sensless violence. It was still good, there was just some sort of element missing.

I just started Season 2 of Sopranos. I haven't seen any Sex and the City. I have not seen Season 3 of The Wire.

Carnivale, The Wire, Deadwood, and Six Feet Under are some of the best television I've ever seen, in something resembling that order. OZ and Sopranos are both excellent but don't inspire the fanaticism the previous four do.

Deadwood has climbed pretty high on my list, while it's not very historically accurate chronologically it is just an impressive show and with only one season so far.

The Sopranos may still inspire fanaticism in you Pascal, since you've just started Season 2 and you have so far to go. Oz fell completely apart following the awesome death of Audebesi.

Season 3 is the best season of the wire but you might want to brush up on Season 1 because it ties a lot more into that.

I thought this would be appropriate, and it's not a load of shit, either. I'm not on any listserves for the show; rather I'm on a DC acting listserve and this came up. I'm sure you HBO fans have heard about it at one point or another, and since this is the original series thread, I thought you may be interested.

Quoted from post:
As many of you know, HBO has not decided whether or not to renew "The Wire". I know that it is a gritty program to watch, but the writing and acting is excellent. In addition, it provides work for many people in this market (actors, hair, makeup, crew ) and brings about 40 million $ into Baltimore.

There is a move on to "save The Wire". Please go to

feel comfortable doing.

I don't know if the wire should do another season. Most aspects of the major story were wrapped up pretty tightly in the finale. There are still plenty of directions to take it, but when they took season two into the direction of the docs and Sobatkas story it was much less interesting than the previously developed characters and story lines that just didn't shine through enough in the 2nd season. After realizing this they brought back the bulk of season one and just finished it...quite well too. So I don't know. Whatever they put out next would be different and that didn't work too well in season 2.

Quoted from KrazeeEyesKilla:
Well, they made it clear that she will next week. But why does the card have the dead girl on it? That's whats really getting to me.

I didn't notice that. I also haven't seen the promo for the next episode so you might have a better idea of what's going to happen. The cards are still a mystery, but they definately seem drawn to ben, so you could conclude at this point that they bare a special significance to both his past and future. I'd guess that while one card would represent Brother Justin, the other would represent scudder. Maybe the dead girl represents bens mother. Or the snake lady. Notice how she is beginning to see things since ben ressurected her. The thing in black cloak, the ghost of her old friend, and more interestingly - Loltz. Something's going down with her and I think there's more to it than just "she was dead, so she see's the dead."

What I really want to know is how the atom bomb ties in with all of this. I mean, in Season 1 Management said that the atom bomb was the last event in a chain that Ben had to stop, so does that mean that Ben fails in the end? or in the show's timeline, does the atom bomb never happen?
