So far so good with the INTL Film Festival. The last two months (July, August) have gone rather well, so this month, I'm going to go with a theme suggested by Fisher, which is a war movie theme. I've chosen five movies which fit the war movie theme and are all critically acclaimed. They are listed below.

However, before I list this months movies, allow me to outline some rules:

  1. The Terms of Service and the general rules of Inside Discussions still apply in this thread. Act like a moron and you'll be treated like a moron.
  2. The intention of this film festival is to expose people to great movies and stimulate discussion and forum cohesion through the discussion of the films featured.
  3. You may at any time suggest a movie (or a theme) for the following month; however, failure to participate in the film discussions will immediately put your suggestion in the back of the line.
  4. If you are having trouble finding a movie, do not make a request in this thread for someone to post a bootleg or illegal copy of the film, this will result in you being banned for an indetermined amount of time.
  5. I have included several links to other various sites that feature reviews, discussions, and spoilers pertaining to the film. Feel free to utilize those links to help stimulate the discussions here. Do not plagerize, however.
  6. I have also included a direct link to Amazon.com's listing for each film. If you enjoyed the film, please make use of this feature and purchase a copy of the film; by doing so you are both supporting those involved in creating the film and also INTL through the commission that is generated.

And with that, here are the movies for this month:

I cannot stress Band of Brothers enough. Absolute best World War 2 movie out there. It's still pretty expensive, but for 10 hours of one of the best motion picture's I've ever seen it's well worth it.

How about a "TOTAL COMEDY ROCK OUT THEME" with such movies as Wayne's World, the Bill and Ted series, Empire records, etc. I'm sure everyone hasn't seen them all.

Band of Brothers takes all. I'd like to suggest a film not listed though.

The Thin Red Line

IMDB Link:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120863/
IMDB Rating:7.1/10
Starring:Sean Penn, John Cusack, George Clooney, the list goes on and on....
Plot Summary:In 1943, the first major U.S. offensive of World War II is drawing to a close on the South Pacific island of Guadalcanal. To put an end to this campaign, the United States Army arrives with a full division of troops and equipment, deployed to break the last resistence of the Japanese. The exploits of this Division are seen from a number of perspectives amongst the soldiers; to include a war weary Sergeant, a power hungry Colonel, a Private who has known only desertion and AWOL, and a Company Commander is is struggling with his abilities as a leader.

When I watched this I had to do so in the morning after I woke up. If you try to watch this when you're exhausted, you'll pass out in the first 20 minutes of the movie, nearly guaranteed. It's a very low volume movie, but picks up as it moves along. This is probably one of the more moving war movies I've seen, mostly because they don't overdo everything with massive useless and unbelievable explosions. This is a well done film and is actually classified as a Fox War Film Classic. Check it out if you have 3 hours to kill some night, it's worth the watch.

Band of Brothers is, in my opinion, the greatest war mini-series of all time. I'd buy it if I had money because it's definitely worth the 80 dollars.

Hamburger Hill, Thin Red Line, and Platoon are all fantastic war movies, some of my favourites. I havn't seen them in awhile, though, so I'd have to watch them agian in order to give accurate reviews.

Are we allowed to suggest other war movies, or do we have to stick to the ones mentioned?

I recieved Band of Brothers as a Christmas gift from my parents, and I watched every episode religiously for the next 2 days. The visuals, characterization, and all around storyline is excellent.

I also watched The Killing Fields, but I did not enjoy that as much as some of the other war movies I have seen.

Enemy at the Gates, The Longest Day, M*A*S*H, and Braveheart are also on my list of series and films with war themes that I have enjoyed.

Edit: One of my all time favorites, Schindler's List also.

I still consider Band of Brothers 12 hours of Saving Private Ryan, and that's just awesome.

I've been wanting to see Platoon for the longest time (I'ma huge Full Metal Jacket fan), and I've definately been interested in all the other. I saw Glory in a couple history classes, and the ending is by far the best part about it.

Glory and Platoon are really good, but I am kind of wondering how Apocalypse Now got left out.

Blackhawk Down is also another classic that could have made it onto this list, and represents a more modern take on warfare.

Dante: I'm not going to include 20 movies in the topic post. I just don't have the time to sit down and write the topic post and do all the footwork of hunting down all the links. It takes me like half an hour to create these threads.

Anyway.

I completely forgot about Thin Red Line, which should probably be in the place of Glory, which was the only movie I included that I wasn't too sure about; it was high rated at IMDB though, so I picked it.

I didn't choose Apocalypse Now because it's a Kubrick film; choosing that would be as cliche as choosing Full Metal Jacket. On the same token, I didn't choose Blackhawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates, MASH, Braveheart, Schindler's List, etc, because everyone has seen those movies, time and time again. Actually, that's probably just me, but whatever. That doesn't mean you can't still discuss them, however.

Basically, I tried to pick some movies that aren't as popular or well-known as the ones mentioned in the above paragraph. Hopefully, there's at least one movie for everyone on this list that they haven't seen. If not, oh well.

Enemy at the Gates is one of my favourite war movies partly because it's based on a true story, and partly because it stars Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes, both of whom are fantastic actors. Also, the soundtrack from this movie is the greatest.

One other movie I'd like to suggest is 'A Midnight Clear.' I don't really know if it's well-known or not, (I don't think it is) but it should be. It's a WWII movie, which does it right there for me because WWII has always been my 'favorite' war. Although it is about war, it's more concerned with playing wiht your emotions than it is with stunning you with fantastic fight scenes, so really it's not one big blood-fest.

IMDB Link:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102443/
IMDB Rating:7.4/10
Starring:Peter Berg, Kevin Dillon
Plot Summary:Set in 1944 France, an American Intelligence Squad locates a German Platoon wishing to surrender rather than die in Germany's final war offensive. The two groups of men, isolated from the war at present, put aside their differences and spend Christmas together before the surrender plan turns bad and both sides are forced to fight the other.

"Enemy at the Gates" I think is pretty mediocre, except in the visual aspect. I mean, the writing makes me wince; The actors' seem to make no attempt to, you know, act Russian, I guess for some quasi-artisic reason; and the soapy love triangle, bloody hell. It's an impressive looking film, with no substance.

Anyway I recommend:

Band of Brothers is excellent - I believe it's played on the History channel every so often?

And I know there'll be a bunch of opposition to it, but I wouldn't mind a Robin Williams themed movie month. He has a ton of talent, and a wide variety of wonderfully captured characters.

Unfortunately, at the same time, a lot of the movies he's in would probably be less entertaining now than when I was ten. At the same time, Good Morning Vietnam, and Jakub the Liar might even fit into this month's, and are both fantastic, I think.

We should really do "Crazy Fucking Japanese Month."

why not have a silent theme ? where we discuss some silent films ?
While I like these themes and would love to do them, I doubt many people would be able to hunt down some Japanese movies like Ichi The Killer, Battle Royale, Juon, Audition, Versus, etc.

I try to choose movies which are popular and mainstream enough for everyone to be able to participate.
No.
