I talked with Rich and we seemed agreed about moving back to a colocated server. If I can get a working server together into the 1U case I have, then can set up colocation with a cheaper monthly rate. Here are the two best colocation options:
$50/mo, no setup, 1000GB transfer/mo
1U or tower
$25/mo, $70 setup, 500GB transfer/mo
1U only
Given how poor I am, each computer part counts. So I'm going to list them.
2 x 300GB SATA hard drives
1U 150W power supply, will NOT power an opteron mobo
754 Athlon motherboard w/3 DIMMs
2Ghz Athlon 754 processor
3GB DDR400 RAM (non-ECC) in 1GB sticks
2 x opteron 252
1 940 opteron motherboard w/4 DIMMs, is NOT compatible with 252s
3GB DDR400 ECC Registered RAM in 512MB sticks
It would not be workable to get the opteron in the 1U configuration. The first reason is that a suitable 1U powersupply would be about $60 at least. The second is that I would need another 1U heatsink at $25+. The third is that the network card is flaky. I could put in another network card but then I wouldn't be able to get a video card in there.
If we are thinking of trying to use the opterons in a server that would involve getting a new motherboard, which is going to run about $150. And this would mean going back on the $50/mo plan.
I have all the parts necessary to build a 1U server if we are going that option. However, I'M USING THAT MACHINE. So I'd need it replaced. It's currently a file server that I leave running 24/7. I could get a cheap processor for the opteron motherboard to replace it, but that would consume a significant amount of electricity and I would end up paying that cost in other ways. Replacing the file server I have would cost about $100.
What does this all mean? Currently, I'm planning on setting up a 1U as a colocated server. However, I can't do this until I can replace my current file server and I can afford the upfront $120 ($70 setup, $25 first month, $25 shipping) it would cost to setup at the new colocation facility. In addition, I have to pay COD shipping for the old server that broke which is $35 out of my pocket.
So basically, until I save up about $200, we're going to stay on the slow shitting shared hosting. My stipend stops paying next month and I'll be living on money borrowed from my relatives to get through the summer, so we may be on this setup until the fall unless I can find another source of funds.
