Preface

Ah, history! Man's greatest triumph. Without it, the past lies only in your memory... okay, that's not entirely true for a message board. Every thread and post is stored in a database, and is thus searchable. So why have a history? The sole reason is because it's convenient. Want to know why INTL began? It's here and written. Did you forget something you posted 4 years ago? It's probably noted. It might just be worthwhile to read it, if just for the "Big Bathroom Book" novelty of it.

Section I: The History FAQ

So... why exactly do you have a 'history'? How conceited!
Because we can, and we're crazy. A few among our rank take pride in their ability to chronicle the history of places, and this includes places online. Rest assured it's not intended to be self-absorbed and egotistical; it's just a hobby of a few people.

That's ridiculous, who actually reads this crap?
Technically, it's intended to act as a reference to new users - to get a grasp as to what INTLers have done here - but realistically the only ones who check this history out are those users who have already been around, and just want to build on their own nostalgia. Occasionally this history has been used by some absent users to catch up on recent events (that is, when it is updated).

There's so many holes in the history. Some months have dozens of events, and others don't have any at all. How lame!
It's alright, shit did happen during that time, it's just that - given that this is just for fun - the people who work on it will pick and choose what they want to do with it. One day, it's possible that it will be completed. It is also possible that the universe will die.

So why should I care?
You don't. Just suck it up, pussy, and read it for the sake of reading something.

First things first, what is the point of the "Origins of INTL" section?
It's intended to show you that INTL didn't begin in a vacuum; that in 2001 Sandamnit didn't just will it into existence just for the sake of it, that there is a background as to why he started it. One event led to another event; A caused B, which influenced C. If "C" is INTL, then the section on the "Origins of INTL" is meant to explain "A" and "B".

Section II: Origins of INTL

From the origins of the internet to the inception of Sandamnit's first message board - Yeah Yeah Whatever - this section describes the factors that drove Sandamnit to create this forum, as well as the forums where many of INTL's members migrated from: Heavengames (HG), IGOD, SpankMag, SomethingAwful (SA), FARK and SomeplaceSomewhere (SPSW).

Before 1996
  • The first newsgroup is created. Similar to message boards, newsgroups were used to converse on specific topics prior to the World Wide Web becoming popular.
  • The 'Great Renaming' occured. Most newsgroups go through a profound change in purpose. Sex, Drugs and other controversial topics are first allowed.
  • First reported use of spamming, ROFL and LOL (which is said to be derived from the Dutch word for fun).
  • The World Wide Web is invented by the CERN group. Newsgroups rejoice.
  • The first graphical web browser is created - Mosaic (which would later become Netscape).
  • Lycos, the first search engine is created. It indexes 800,000 webpages.
1997
  • HG: Alaskan webdesigner, Mike "Archangel" McCart, creates HeavenGames (HG) - a network of gaming sites with the suffix 'Heaven'.
  • HG: Civilization II Heaven is founded, and Age of Empires Heaven is founded. Both are reasonable successes, and propel activity at HG.
  • HG: Seeing the increasing popularity of AoEH, Archangel terminates several of the original HG sites, including Civilization II Heaven.
1998
  • HG: AoEH reaches its climax of popularity.
  • HG: Citybuilder's Heaven is opened, creating a psychological split between AoEH forumers and Citybuilder forumers.
  • HG: Archangel leaves HG to pursue a career with Ensemble Studios.
  • HG: Age of Empires II Heaven (AoKH) is opened, administered by Omnivac.
  • HG: Draco, with the help of Zen, abolish the old 'coolboards' forums, and replace them with UBB.
1999
  • HG: The new HG forums open, but all previous data is lost.
  • HG: In AoKH's forums, Pieman uses satire and sarcasm to insult other forumers in HG. Most forumers ask him to be banned. Zen bans Pieman, however he would continue to come back and get banned as the months progressed. He is considered a 'hero' to the 'psychos' (see below).
  • HG: HG expands, and provides a forum for off-topic conversations. This causes an increase in arguments and strife between forumers.
  • HG: Omnivac is hospitalized and resigns from being AoKH's webmaster. Washizu ends up taking his place.
  • HG: AoKH staff members, Zul and Seraphim, get involved in several flame wars, and they are forced to resign from HG. The HG administration is criticized for doing so.
  • HG: The off-topic forum is closed once it becomes the haven of religious debates and Legion and Kman's erratic behaviour.
  • SA: Something Awful is created by Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka.
  • FARK: Fark is created by Drew Curtis.
Early 2000
  • HG: A new off-topic forum - HGOD/KoRT - is created at AoKH. Two main 'cultural' groups form within it, the debators (elitest forumers whom, as their name suggests, want only debates in this new off-topic forum) and the 'psychos' (whom are notorious for causing chaos, spam, games and nonsensical threads).
  • HG: Harp00n, considering Pieman as one of his heros, mimics his activities until he is banned.
  • HG: Vlad, begins a campaign of spamming which would continue until the year's end.
  • HG: AoKH staff member, DSC, deletes a substantial portion of AoKH's active forumer population. He is later forced to resign due to this.
  • HG: Religious debates between Cherryfunk and Salahudeen flood HGOD/KoRT, this increases more interest in debating controversial topics: esp. religion and politics.
  • HG: Muzta advocates the creation of a presidential race in HGOD/KoRT. Tonto_Samurai/Pluveto heads one party. Iron Heart heads the debater's party. Sunny heads a neutral party. AoKH staff member, Iron Heart, wins the election by a coalition with Sunny's party, and creates a 'Forum Congress'. The forumers remain divided along debator and 'psycho' lines. It fails horribly.
  • HG: HG's largest thread (at 15000 posts) "The Party Thread" is created by Dimi. It becomes a symbol of the 'psychos' and of HGOD/KoRT in general.
Late 2000
  • HG: A debator, Cherryfunk, baits a newbie, Elcid, into flaming him. Seeing this, AoKH staff member Sunshine/Sunny warns him and the conflict is assumed resolved.
  • HG: The next day angry at Sunshine/Sunny and general HG moderation (which he feels is inadequate), Cherryfunk with Iron Heart's support initiates a flame war between himself and Sunshine. This later erupts into a conflict between all debators and the 'psychos' in the forum between whether they support HG moderation or not. It spreads to other areas of HG and fuels conflicts there between individuals and also towards HG.
  • HG: Zen closes the forums to quell the aforementioned flame war. En masse, the debators leave HG to the forum of a little known Age of Kings clan, the GoF clan.
  • HG: On reopening of the forums, Zen bans Cherryfunk and Iron Heart resigns as a staff member. With the debators gone, the 'psychos', now make up the majority.
  • HG: HG forumer, Mr. T, becomes a symbol of HGOD/KoRT after mimicking celebrity Mr. T in a number of HG threads.
Early 2001
  • HG: Sunshine/Sunny is forced to resign from HeavenGames due to prior events, she becomes a self-proclaimed rebel. BiggN takes her place.
  • SPSW: Iron Heart creates Someplace Somewhere as a strictly philosophical forum. The debators, including Cherryfunk, move to it.
  • HG: wheezy and Psychorabbit, two of the more chaotic 'psychos', encourage a newbie - Emp - to initiate a debacle with unpopular BiggN. BiggN is forced to resign, and Emp's popularity grows among the 'psychos'.
  • HG: Sandamnit stumbles upon HG and registers a forum account there.
  • HG: Sandamnit and Flaming Arrow get mockingly married, after a brief encounter in the Party Thread. This shocked and appalled a lot of people.
  • HG: A new wave of debators (the majority fundamentalist Christians) cause strife between themselves and the 'psychos' within the forum. Forumers, many whom are 'psychos', grow unhappy and rebellious towards HeavenGames.
Late 2001
  • HG: Chooch, Zen, and Icefyre drive from Boston to Philadelphia to meet wheezy and PsychoRabbit.
  • HG: Emp initiates a smear campaign (called "Otnot") against an Age of Kings clan "Tonto", due to it's friendly nature and dominance over HG staff members.
  • HG: Emp, wheezy and other Otnot members get banned from HeavenGames for flooding.
  • SPSW: SPSW reaches its climax.
  • HG: Zen splits HGOD/KoRT, and creates a new forum "The Library" strictly for debates.
  • IGOD: Upset by his banning, Emp decides to create ImperialGames (IGOD) in spite of HeavenGames. IGOD appeals to Otnot members, rebels, and disgruntled 'psychos'.
  • HG: wheezy pulls a practical joke on The Hogs, fooling him that he has been made an HG staff member. Hilarity ensues.
  • IGOD: Sandamnit finds his way over to IGOD, offers up his technical services, and becomes its new Forum Administrator.
  • IGOD: The Acts of Gord is discovered, resulting in Gord gracing IGOD with his presence.
  • IGOD: Pascal discovers Chick Tracts.
  • IGOD Sandamnit resigns from his position at IGOD, because he can't stand being Emp's little bitch.
  • HG: GPA_Breat Benze creates his first "suicide thread". He is met with mixed reactions. Some lend a sympathetic ear, others push the envelope and ridicule him.
  • HG: Sandamnit becomes a staff member at HeavenGames, much to the dismay of the forumers who visit IGOD.
  • HG: Kitabatake posts a thread that was supposedly posted by Woolly Mammoth's brother. Apparantly, Woolly Mammoth died in a car accident... maybe.

Section III: Yeah Yeah Whatever

After his fallout with Emp, Sandamnit began work on his own forum software with the advice of several IGOD and HG forumers. This forum became Yeah Yeah Whatever (YYW) for which there are currently no records available. During this time IGOD was closed, and Emp moved into isolated seclusion for an unknown duration of time.

December 2001
  • YYW: Sandamnit starts writing a forum software which he decides to call temporarily 'The Unnamed Forum'.
  • YYW: Wheezy coins the name of the main TUF forum: Inside Discussions and is appointed moderator of it.
  • YYW: Sandamnit stops writing the forum software for fear that he might lose his newly found position at Heavengames.
  • HG: Sandamnit flies out to Boston to meet Angel Zen, Icefyre, Chooch709, and Tonto Z, who are all staff member at Heavengames, for New Years Eve.
  • Regulars Registered: Sandamnit, ThePerfectCore, (New) Emp, wheezy, pussinboots
February 2002
  • IGOD: Emp announces his plans to create a site called Witty Tirade. He keeps reminding people how many days left until it opens on a daily basis. It was originally slated to open on March 1st, but ended up opening on March 31st, due to Emp's immense sloth and laziness. During this time, Emp started delineating into senility and becomes increasingly irritated with just about everyone.
  • Regulars Registered: None.
March 2002
  • IGOD: IGOD's database crashes, which Emp ends up blaming on Sandamnit. Sandamnit denies responsibility for the database crashing. Sandamnit offers up a solution to the problem, which is then denied, thus furthering the massive fall-out between Sandamnit and Emp.
  • YYW: PsychoRabbit messages Sandamnit with the following: "inigmuh888: you should make a new forum thats better than the IGod".
  • YYW: Sandamnit reopens the forum that he had started working on last December out of spite for Emp, temporarily names the forum "Yeah Yeah Whatever" until he can come up with a better name and continues developing the forum software.
  • YYW: Sandamnit then comes up with the name "Interesting Nonetheless" and registers the domain interestingnonetheless.com.
  • IGOD: In the matter of a few days, most of the people that posted at IGOD started posting at INTL, thus destroying IGOD altogether.
  • YYW: The feature that you can only change other peoples' custom titles and not your own is announced.
  • YYW: The file uploads feature is announced. Much rejoicing ensues.
  • YYW: Geek's Corner is opened, Woadie is appointed moderator.
  • Regulars Registered: PsychoRabbit, Tyr, izzy, The Phoenix, NNY, Sunshine/Sunny, Stormraider, Woadie, boutitben, anaemic_royalty/Drahnier, Dimi, Flaming Arrow, Andyman1, ice, Magus, jimmy, (Baggy) Brad, Ztolk, Pluveto, dufus, Good Ol MC, Ballard, Mr Pixies, emtilt, Fully_Completely, Stevo
